First, let me apologize for the poor quality of photo. I am now reviewing the photo on my computer but am not able to take a new one.

So, my first guess was that it was some sort of tag for a wagon or farm equipment, maybe it is some ID for firemen equipment. Someone also suggested that it looked like an old pet tag.

Something that intrigued me was that the 127 is "fancy" font while the rest is "blah" font. I was thinking, either 127 has some significance or the tag originally only had 127 and the location and date was added later. Like, it's 127 until it's issued, then you add the date and location, at least that's where I got the idea for the wagon/equipment.

Also, I don't want to sway the assumptions or ideas in any particular direction but just to give as much information as possible due to the lack of quality in the image, I can say that the hole does not appear to be "clean". In that I mean that it looks kind of marred as if this was riveted to something which you can kind of see in the image. Also, right at the hole there is a slight bend as if it were pried or popped off from some attachment.

Anyone have any ideas or have you seen something like this before?

You know, at first I was thinking, there were no mines around here but after looking and seeing how much this resembles those types of tags (especially when comparing to the other types mentioned) I thought a bit harder. There is a major rock quarry in the area used mainly for limestone "back in the day". I'm not sure exactly when it was established but there's a definite possibility it was there in 1904.

Thanks.

You have it, tool, equipment, inventory, tree, AG, etc, tag. What is written on it?

I was leaving it open still just in the case that might happen.

Stafford (the name of the town)
127 (unsure but I assume some unique ID)
1904 (the year)

Then I would think it points more towards a city construction, concrete, inspection, permit, date, AG, etc tag.

It is common to find tags like this, they were used for so many things and still are.

A lot of us just call them tool tags, I see them on parts too.

Assuming that lower number is the date, I like the license idea.

My wife works for a Veterinary Clinic, and this resembles some of the pet tags she deals with. Possibly a very early version. Back in those days not a lot of information was necessary. It appears that it may include the township or county name (Stafford), the tag sequence number (127), and either the issue or expiration year (1904).

Much like this vintage triangular one .... They came in all shapes and sizes.

That is not an old dog tag IMO. I have found several old dog tags and seen many more, still have them and have previously posted them on TN. The dog tags had smooth holes punched into them and hung from the collar, the other type was attached to the collar with rivets, and none have crude hold punched into them like I see on this tag. The same method that is used today.

Hmmmmm .... I'm bettin' it IS a pet tag.

Disqualifying a valid description simply because of the condition of a hole is kinda lame ... IMO. I do know for a fact that holes in things get beaten to heck and mishapen through normal usage .... Especially pet tags!

What we have here is simply an old rusty pet tag that has a hole in it, that has become bent out of shape through it's 110 years of existence.

Well I poo-pooed that assumption because I have found dog licenses and even traded one for a hunting spot with Gary from San Bernardino. I know the characteristics of them and what information is on most of them. If you researched dog license not dog tag you might find that out too. There is nothing but a city, date and number on that tag, it could be anything except a dog license, might be a tree tag.

None of those have crude holes driven into them like the tag that the OP posted DID. There is a lady that buys old dog licenses but she won’t buy what the OP posted. I think her name is Barbra, Deborah or Brenda, some on TN know who I'm referring to. That's how I found out about her. I think her club trys to keep the market cornered on old dog licenses, her information only comes by a PM.

it might even be a tag for a key, round metal stamping tag:

Dog tags look like this IMO, some are shaped like a bone, bell, dog head, etc, but it could be a dog tag but how could that be verified it? That's how they do it on Pawn Stars, lol.
