Took the boat out today and hit some old water spots where Ive done really well in past but in recent years its hard to find anything. Got a really faint low tone right at the waters edge and from way down out pops this

Wow! 1800s U.S. gold, and in great shape too. I am still looking for my first gold coin. I say BANNER for that beauty. Congrats!

Wow! You can be absolutely sure that was made from gold found in the CA gold rush of 1849. In 1853, the mint produced 4 million gold dollars. This is by far the most common date in the entire run, 1849-1889.
That coin might grade MS if it wasn’t damaged. Gold coins are the holy grail of detecting as far as I’m concerned.
