gold vidios

GoPros are excellent except in low light situations. But they make up for that with the mounting options. They are also very tough I have yet to break mine despite it taking some pretty good tumbles. Also the water proof cases work very well.

The new Gopro3 does low light really well. Git one!

One more option. The Kodak Zi8 in 1080p mode shoots incredible quality video.

I'm still old school, packing around a Canon G3 with 3CCD's that stores images on DV tapes. Heavy, bulky and takes amazingly good pics even in low light. As you are doing, go for the modern gear.

BUT - How long do the batteries hold up in the GoPro 3???? How many batteries are recommended for say a two week outing?? And do you feel the LCD add on screen is a valuable accessory?? And how large of an SD card will it take?? Umm and how much is it online in $'s??
200_0089.webp Watch out, the dog bites. And yes he is wearing a full camo outfit.

For 300 bucks you could get a Canon 550D which can shoot video and take high mega pixel amazing photo's, Go-pro's are great and versatile but they always shoot a very wide angle shot and work best in aerial or landscape shots imo. Here is some work done with a Canon 550D the vids little off topic but it's to show the video quality. one with mild artistic violence and some post production work that I liked so much I shared on my Facebook page: Personally I'd recommend a 60d from cannon if you really want to have great video and photography options. A battery lasts about 4.5 hrs of recording or much less if using the LCD back. It takes the biggest top of the line highest speed SD cards. The LCD screen is worth it for sure.

This guy seems to know more than I do. I suggest some comparison shopping :-) ...good luck and pls share what you learn!

ok guys I want start videoing my gold adventures what camera do u guys think is the best maybe 200 t0 300 bucks

I'll try and keep this answer short... but it could take 5 pages... LOL

Cameras have evolved SO FAR over the past 5 years it really is amazing.
I was VERY lucky to be trained by my brother-in-law who has done professional shooting and editing for more than 20 years.
Much of his time was with NBC.
Even he has converted to the small compact cameras, agreeing that there simply is not enough justification in resolution, features, etc, in the more expensive models.
A good cam for most is this one.
Sony-HDR-CX190-review.webp
Sony HDR-cx190
Shoots in full 1080 HD and also offers SO MANY features you'll never use them.
Carl Zeiss lens, stabilization, etc.
Fits in your pocket and uses SIM cards.
Now that's important.
Run out of room, put in another sim card.
Drop it in a river... it's ok. Sim card will still have video on it.
(DO NOT ask me how I know that.)
The screen is a bit small, but most don't need a big screen for general stuff.
Runs about $200
By the way... this is a VERY small camera.
Measures about 4.5" long and fits in a child's hand.

It's one of them.
We usually bring three.
If we travel we bring 3 cameras, extra batteries for all, and several sim cards.
Most of our units can record to the internal hard drive or a sim card.
We always shoot to the sim and use 16 gig cards.

You don't see the HD footage we shoot. It is 1920 x 1080.
We reduce it down a LOT for Youtube.
Editing we use Sony Vegas. We use the upper end version, but they make a cheaper standard one too which is fine.
Just make sure you have plenty of "machine" (PC) speed. Video eats it up like nothing else.
You may want to get an external drive and host the raw video there.

thanks guys Ill probally go with a sony like doc talked about my last one was a sony it last about 5 years

Carnet56,

Do your homework, the internet is at your disposal. Read the reviews of all makes and models that have been mentioned. You will be surprised of what you find if you do some research. Some claim to record in HD when they really don't, while others used plastic lenses. There is a reason why a video camera cost under $200.00. They are cheap and disposable...

GoPro3 in a nutshell...

All three are good choices, Cannon, GoPro, and the Sony.
Gopro is better for ROUGH handling, water, etc. Can shoot in 1920 x 1080 hd.
Sony is better for actual production shooting and editing work.
Has a true image stabilization setting and goes higher than HD with vivid color modes. (HDFX)

Also, go to youtube and watch some of the videos there.
People have done some great side by side testings.
I like this one.

The Sony Action Cam as in the video above and the Sony HDR-cx190 are not the same video camera. Furthermore the GoPro does not have any stabilization and the video is keying on stabilization control with all the movement. True image stabilization is not an electronic circuit within the video camera but a device that stabilizes the cameras movement. Onboard video stabilization on these cheap video cameras may appear to be improving the image but in all reality its degrading the image. Kinda like digital zoom and what it does to the image quality. I think GoPro decided to use a fixed lenses so they stayed away from issues of zoom lenses. Zoom lenses all have issues across their zoom path. Unless you get into high dollar gear using something like a Canon L lens where you can spend 20K for just the lenses your better off finding a video camera that has a fixed lens. All the whistle and bells are cool but most likely you will never use the gimmick software that's embed in these throw away video cameras.

Your best bet is not to be talking to those that dig in the dirt but those that live and breath video production. Go get the answers your looking for in HD Video Forums. Here are a few, but the net is full of forums. On another note you can't have the best of both worlds. You can't have a still camera and a video camera and hope they perform at the best of their abilities, they don't. Yes they make them and I own a Canon SX210is and it has HD video but lets leave it at that.

If you get a gopro consider getting the black. It's a great setup and really good video quality.
The only issue you might have is decent audio through the waterproof case if you use one.
You'll probably (for sure) end up reducing it down for YouTube anyway, so "super high quality" really doesn't matter a WHOLE bunch in the end.
I think the big issue that most don't deal with is the editing software choice and a PC fast enough to match up with video editing.
Lots of the new cams record in avchd format, so matching it up with an editing software that LOVES that format helps a bunch.
Hope that helps.
Doc

Here's what the sony video looks like in true 1920.
Some of the shots cameras have trouble with like moving water, varying depth of fields, etc.
It does a pretty good job for about $179

Lots of good discussion ITT, I saw this and drooled a little in the clearance section, I already started buying canon lenses but this is a cool camera on clearance for $279 that is in between high and low-end if you guys are in the market, it has good reviews I checked before posting just in case lol. 16.1 Megapixels with an 18-55mm lens and some good features Sony - NEX-F3 Compact System Camera with 18-55mm Lens - Black - NEXF3K/B
