It appears to be half assed hard but seems a little lighter than it should be. Any idea?

Hard to tell. Break it open, chip of an edge and see what it looks like.
See if a knife will scratch it, what the streak test shows. Check for magnetism. (if non-magnetic we can rule out magnetite)

Appears to be mostly granitoids with lots of Mica.
 

Help me identify this 40lb rock

Hi to all, I just joined & would like some help with something.. My sister in law has this big 40lb rock in her yard & no matter what I say, she insists that this is a rare white meteorite..(yeah, I know...) She found it in a riverbed in Oregon. My guess is that it's a well worn, eroded chunk of quartz but I'm in need of someone else setting the record straight. Since I don't have a geology background, my answers have no validity in her eyes. So, what do you think this is? (I can't wait to show her!) Thanks all!

Thanks arizau.. yes I know how to check for meteorites, I actually have a few that I found near Lake Mead..'near' Lake Mead.. they obviously are NOT part of the Gold Basin strewn field (because that would be illegal, right? wink wink). Anyway, my sis in law doesn't believe me because she saw a photo in a magazine of some rare white meteorite. Of course she doesn't have the article so I can debunk the story..or at least explain why the rock in the photo isn't like hers at all. She won't even take it to the geology dept at Oregon St because she's afraid they'll confiscate it.. now do you see what I'm dealing with? Lol

Quartz seems like a reasonable guess.
 

Hi, I'm new here, nice forum! :hello:. I'm starting and trying to identify rocks I got in travels and as you can see I'm clueless. Sadly I don't know where this rock is from, I think a friend gave it to me. I can see quartz (I think) and a mineral that is metallic brownish in one side and doesn't break like micas.

A quartz with sulphides. Possibly pyrrhotite or sphalerite.
 

petrified finger?

I found this a few years back, along with several hundred other rocks, and it looks to me like a finger. You can even see where the nail bed sits on top of the finger on the underside of the nail. New to site. Living on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica for over a year now. Starting to really explore for unique shells but now I have become fascinated with some of the rocks I find. Obviously, very different than the rocks I grew up with in Texas. Pics attached are of one I found last week. Color stood out among all the dark rocks I see. And, more interesting to me is the weight. I would estimate about twenty pounds. Little guy is solid. Trying to identify before I bust it open. Any help is appreciated. Pura Vida... not sure why pics attached upside down.
