well I havent been on in quite some time now. and i just recently got laid off from my job so i have had a lot of extra time to detect. the only problem is i'm finding nothing but trash trash and more trash. it's getting quite frustrating. I'm curious if I'm not detecting deep enough. I know I'm hitting really good old sites like parks that where built in the early 1900's and old ghost towns but I'm just finding modern day trash. right now I'm using a garrett GTAX 550 and my depth is set around 5 to
5 1/2 inches. i figured thats a good depth because the ground where i live is mostly hard packed clay and once you go deeper than that it gets really tought to dig. maybe some of the veterans on here can give me some pointers I've been detecting for about a year now and the best thing i have found was a silver loop earing worth about $10 so if you have a garrett 550 and or know someone who does maybe you could shoot me some pointers. I would greatly appretiate it. please help me get out of the M ding blues.

Old parks? in Reno????

Every MD guy who took his wife there for a bit of gambling has hit those! ;D

Try the campus lawns up at UNR... if it's legal.

If you like to dig the old stuff, see if your library has any old Sanborn maps, out here in Colorado you can view them online. That way, you can get a better understanding of any old sites opening up. If you do find a decent site, say an old house torn down, get online and use Google Earth to view what was once there. The view that you will see is at least a year old, so you can see what was there at one time. Helps when you might want to see where the back yard started, or any thing else interesting. Might try a smaller coil, I use whites detectors, don't know about your brand. Just keep going out and detecting. We all go through droughts, it'll turn around.

you have to cleanout the trash before you can find the good things.
keep digging, good luck

Hello Joe,
how's things with you. haven't heard from you in a good while. I thought you were in police academy ? Are you back in Reno ? Made it to Tahoe back in March, too cold though to do any detecting. You should go back to that spot where we went in North Tahoe where I found that nugget. I bet you would have a fair chance working at the base of that hill where we were, and around that trail. Keep in touch.

I know there silver in Nevada, somewhere. I stopped in a small mining town of Goldsmith last year and I would have loved to hunt that place. A gold town that litterally went "bust " But the ground sure is hard out there. Keep your head up and you will find something sooner or later :icon_sunny:
