Saw something shiny in the hole thought maybe it was a piece of jewelry, pull it out it's a razor blade, could've been bad. Also found this pretty cool key

looks to be the same type of key as my safety deposit box.

That what it looks like to me...a safety deposit key. Thanks for getting rid of the razor blade in a good way. That would hurt a little kid bad.

yea that coulda made a nasty cut. I've found rusty blades before. have cut myself on broken grass that happened to be in the hole next to a target. you just gotta be careful because you never know what you might get into.

another reason why i wear gloves.

I've cut myself digging out trash pits off of an old rusty gasoline sign.. it's not fun.. thanks for getting that out of there before a kid got to it.

Hazards of the hobby. When I find something like that, I make sure it comes out with me too. You might just be saving someone else from having a bad day later. We will never get it all but any is better than none. Everyone that I know that has hunted for any length of time has a story of getting cut by something.

Wear gloves good gloves. Mechanic gloves give a lot of protection from cuts and scrapes.

I have not been wearing gloves when I hunt. I've been lucky. I'll wear them now.

An unsubtle reminder that it's not all treasure...crazy sad that somebody would carelessly discard that. Good on you for removing it!

peace,

Magnets are a good tool to carry also

I wear gloves metal detecting, and when I got cut it was on my forearm. Not fun but thank the lord I had my Tetnis Shots.

WOuld be nice to see inside that safety deposite box.. lol probably nothing

Utility blade and a fresh one at that. That one would have bled if it had got you. Be safe and find that deposit box : )

Slower but Safer

A safer way is not to put your hand in the hole. I use a pin pointer to better locate the item and a composite garden spade to remove the dirt after I open up the plug. I doubt that a glove would provide much protection against the razor blade , a syringe needle, or a large salt water barbed fish hook.

I do not kick wet sand from the stand up scoop to spread it out for the same reason, as you do not know what you are kicking with your foot to spread it out. Instead I spread out the sand by dragging portions of it toward me with the stand up scoop. A slower but safer process.

I don't know if people still use traps or not but since I've been detecting in remote areas that are full of critters I've been extra cautious when I hit a really strong iron signal. Would not enjoy getting my hand caught in a trap...even my kevlar motorcycle gloves would prove futile then, I reckon.

All the more reason you should wear gloves. Neat key
