I received a set for my birthday. Any tips on how to use them? Way to check the seal before I immerse them?

Get them wet, that is what the warranty is for.

The only place they may leak would be the volume adjustment, which is very rare. Only seen a few, and scuba divers owned. The piezo's are sealed with Orings and never seen a fail on them...

The potentiometers that I had recommend for the GGA'(II)s and a leaked stocker.

The newer ones Amphibious 2 by grey ghost dose not have the volume control. A little more expensive.
