Hello Fellow Tnetters,

I hear a lot of Explorer owners can't wait to get their hands on this new SE Pro coil. I was happy to finally get mine yesterday, after the FedEx truck had delivered my coil to a different address earlier in the morning. :icon_scratch:

Armed with my new coil, I was thinking of a good place to give it a good test. I picked an area that has been pounded by no fewer than 6 Explorer hunters multiple times. It's an area also where the "deepies" are hiding amongst trash, in addition to underground piping which makes your machine freak out. Arriving at around 1:30 in the afternoon yesterday, I was clearly able to see the many (hundreds) of previous plugs in the turf. They weren't that obvious from the street because the whole area is completely dry (brown) from the recent heat and lack of watering. I noticed that the new coil is extremely sensitive to even the smallest pieces of lawnmower clipped coins. It's also well balanced. At first, I couldn't get used to the sound the coil makes when swinging it over the blades of turf, but eventually I did. Within minutes, I got a few wheats, then received a mixed signal, but was able to hear a higher tone mixed in with a low tone. I dug, and found my first silver with the coil, a Rosie, with a piece of pull tab next to it. I was continually pulling coins right next to old plugs....it was amazing. About a half hour later, I got a very faint zinc'y signal, which I could hear from only one direction. I knew this could be either a cut piece of coin or a deeper Indian. It turned out to be the latter. A nice 1893 Injun. I was very pleased with the new coil so far. I continued to sweep my coil over old plugs in the ground, and right next to another one, I heard a faint high tone, but it was difficult to pinpoint because of the iron nearby. I dug down and around 7", I saw the white, thin coin. Could it be? Yes, a 1906 S barber dime. I was ecstatic!! I was really starting to love this coil, and it's ability to separate faint coin targets from trash targets. My last coin of the day was another very tricky, faint signal mixed with an iron sounding signal. I took a chance, and at 8" my probe sounded off with that nice zinc tone, signaling another Injun. Yes, I had found my oldest coin dug from this area since detecting it....an 1889.

The other silvers/wheats were from some previous trips using my older 1050 and 8" Sunray coils. For now, I will continue to use the new Pro coil, and give it a go at some of my other "well hunted" sites. I am more than pleased with my first hunt results. I think ML is going to be struggling to keep up with demand for this new coil for a while!

Thanks for looking, and Happy Hunting!!

Dan,
Too hot back here for me to get out detecting right now. I am missing that Calif weather BAD!!! :icon_sunny: :wink:
I do have a new spot lined up though. A 1920's farm house on 10 acres. :thumbsup:
Take care,
Doug

Nice hunt Dan. That '64 dime on the bottom looks like it has a little mint luster left on it. Looks like the new coil works pretty well, then again, you make it look easy. :D :thumbsup:

WTG Dan :icon_king:, and thanks for such a motivation thread.

Thanks again :thumbsup:.

Thanks, Rob! Yeah, some of those silvers were found in dry, hard packed dirt. A little of the original luster of the silver is still on some of those coins.

WTG Dan icon_king, and thanks for such a motivation thread.

Thanks again

Thanks, Anthony. Hey, gold is up today on a very downward spiraling market... ???

Dan ,Congrats on the great finds,I am glad you like that coil mine is on the way !!! :thumbsup:

Dan,

Congrats on the great finds! My plan is to purchase an SE next year, thanks to your motivation. I'm thinking it could do quite well in Iowa. I've been detecting 9 months now with an Ace 250, and have become really hooked on the hobby. I just ordered a bigger coil for the Ace. My goal is to find $300 with the Ace, then I can justify moving up to the SE. The new coil sounds great. All your finds have been an inspiration to me. Keep up the great work, and best regards for your continued success!

HH,

Dr. Ace

Looks like the new coil is really working out for you! :thumbsup: Very nice job on all of the silver and wheat pennies plus a couple of Indians to call it a day! :thumbsup: You really know the SE well! Soon I hope to be as good as all of you guys who own the SE's! I also think it is location choice as well! Keep up the hunting! :thumbsup: ;D

That's just insane Dan! I have the Explorer SE Pro (ESP) and so far I love it but I would sure like to have the silver raining down on me like you do. I haven't logged more than 50 hours yet on the ESP but I think I know what to listen for now. Part of my problem with those iffy signals is that I don't know where the heck to dig, and don't want to dig monster 15" diameter. The obvious iffiness of the signal doesn't really make me confident to just start digging either. Any advice on iffy signals? A lot of the iffy ones I come across are also nulling out. I've pretty much been running the factory discrimination pattern, but have changed a bunch of the other settings. Here's the meat of it:

response = normal
volume = 8 (wearing the Koss headphones that came with the detector, and these seem pretty nice to me)
gain = 9 (I was running 7 but I just look at the depth now because the good signals are far and few in the parks I'm hunting)
th. tone = 2
variability = 10
limits = 10
sounds = ferrous (I just switched to ferrous recently when trying to pinpoint iffy signals amongst the iron, conductive would make a high pitch sound with the iron too, now it's low for ferrous and high for non-ferrous. I don't really know how much the conductivity value varies the pitch when in ferrous mode. I kind of wish it just used both in some creative way, like dual tones or something)
recovery = deep on, fast off.

I hunt in the Digital mode for now to get the hang of what numbers sound like what. Because I know pretty much what stuff is supposed to be this is helping, but most everyone I talk to with Explorers uses the Smartfind graph and doesn't really even look at the display.

Any advice on my settings or general methods with the ESP would be appreciated!!

Once again, congrats on a great haul! The proverbial "needle in a haystack" really applies to your success at that park. Keep on huntin'!

Typical good hunt for you Dan. If you are going to find the good coins, you have to be able to hunt in the trashy areas. It is the way it is in Mo. parks and yards. Most of the easy coins have been found so the iffy targets are all that is left. Keep on going slow and checking the iron stuff from all angles and you will reap your rewards (SILVER)
