Guess it's my turn to ask a rock quesiton

Ok guys be gentle with me but I have a rock question...how does a square hole form in rocks? Both of these are 3 1/2" wide and 2" thick but the holes are a little different on each one with the biggest being about and inch square.

Several common minerals like calcite, pyrite, lead, etc can form in cubic/square shapes. If they erode faster than the host rock, then it can leave the shape of the long gone mineral. Here's a sample rock I found where a calcite crystal once was:

Thank you scepter1 and that is a perfect example! Now I know the answer and can add these guys to my rock garden!

That was a much better answer than I could of given and even with an example. Cudos septer

...that was a good question Peaches...now I know to...thanks!

I pulled a rock out of a creek that had a beer bottle embedded in it. At lesser 2 " the constant movement of the bottle against the rock and a little time, I was amazed!

i have several rocks with hexagonal holes in them, took me a while to figure that out too.

I couldn't figure out how or why the native americans would do that, googled and searched and couldn't find anything and I knew the peeps on the forum would have the answer and since there've been a lot of questions lately on rocks I took my chances. ;-)
