my brother and i hunted an area that i really didn't think would be very promising. about 20 minutes into the hunt he comes over with a copper disc, smaller than a large cent but bigger than an Indian head. it was very corroded but i think it is a half cent. its hard to get much detail off of it but there is definitely a bust facing right on it, and i can almost make out the words "America","liberty" and "half cent". its soaking in olive oil at the moment. I'm tempted to buzz it with electrolysis but I'm afraid i will make it worse.i hope i will be able to extract a date from it. anyway, after about an hour of digging trash and clad, i decided to hunt on the other side of a little road. it looks like it may have been a picnic grove or something at one time. the first target i dug was this beautiful 1919 standing liberty quarter! a first for me! then a little later this 1916 merc pops out! ( no "D"
) i also found two large cents. one of them looks like it was hammered on the edges. i cant get a date off of it and its hard to scan a decent pic of it because its not flat anymore. you can almost see "one cent" in the scan. the other large cent is an 1830 but again it didn't scan well. copper coins around here really take a beating in this soil. I'm always jealous of you guys who post nicely detailed dug large cents. i have found 6 and they all are beat up.
. i also found a little gold plated ring and a couple of Wheaties. also an old copper id tag that reads, "J. EDWARDS WILMINGTON DE" its probably from 1900 or so. looks like i might have stumbled onto a site that hasn't been hunted to death for a change! i don't want to give up any clues to its location but i will say that it is in a very unlikely spot.
we only hunted a small portion of the area, so hopefully there will be more where this came from!

I still have yet to find one. The "common" silver has too much of a pull. So I haven't been hitting the older sites much.
i guess you cant have it all. thank you everyone for the nice replies. i really hope the return trip produces the same kind of results. i dont know what this area was 100 years ago but i suspect it may have been a picnic grove. hopefully no one else has ever hunted it before! i guess i will know in another couple of hunts. thanks again everyone.
