Has Anyone Ever Been Assaulted While Metal Detecting? I Was Yesterday Evening

I've been a corrections officer for 23 years. I have overheard the inmates through the years talk about tactics to steal from people who least expect it.
Scumbags! Who prey on the public. I always have my .38 when detecting.
Point click bang.
I feel better with my .38 loaded with buffalo bore hollow points.
The revolver for me is easier than having to draw a .45 or .9 mm.

I work a lot of parking lots and although I carry-I find myself very venerable when down on one knee digging or locating a coin-the concentration is so strong you can miss someone coming up behind//

A usually hunt with my buddy

glock43-left.webp

Probably not an option for most Canadians.
I detect some dodgy areas and hunt alot at night, had some minor run ins but so far no assaults.

Glad you didn't get hurt, any description of the suspects ?

funny when most people see me they walk away
wonder if the the fact that have pistol on my hip with two spare clips

it may seem like things are worse, maybe because we're old now, or because we can hit a computer key and see a compilation of a million videos of senseless violence, or simply because there are more talking heads saying how bad crime and American carnage is, but in fact, it's much safer now than in the 70's (I was 20 in 1973), that's for sure. If you went to our downtown (Miami) at night back then, you were either out of your mind or looking for trouble...the streets were deserted after dark. Today, young women walk their little french bulldogs on the streets of our downtown day and night and live in expensive downtown condos. It's amazing to me,, to see all that real estate downtown, and going north along Biscayne Blvd where the hookers were once common as mosquitos in the keys, now full of nightlife, well-to-do folks going to restaurants, galleries, hookah bars, you name it. I have recently used public transportation with my son downtown at night to and from his downtown school for book fairs, concerts etc., the train cars full of good people enjoying the freedom to be out at night on the streets, it was like a dream. It's absolutely astounding to me. It reminded me of the freedom from fear I had felt that summer I spent in Europe back in 1971. Yes, there is still senseless violence and stupid, brutal criminals are still out there in America...but there are more safe places where the criminals don't own the streets.

I keep my eyes out for anything around me also carry my gun.

Hi; Jeff, If anyone gives you a hard time yyou can always show them that video. It should make them think twice about hurting you.!!! :tongue3: Glad your ok John. PEACE:RONB

thanks for the thought John, however I am the one to be feared anywhere I am!

Can only say I live 10 miles out of a town with 1000 nice folks and 1 old coot. Never go detecting or anywhere else without a 45 on my hip. Just hope I never need to use it!

plan on doing alot of detecting with my new garrett in search of gold this summer in the forest in northern calif by myself. Dont know if I will find any gold but will be armed for protection. Anyone hear those David Pilates missing 411 tales ? I am more scared out in woods now then city:laughing7: and i work in a crime ridden east bay area city

Mattt.. if you are out in the Nor Cal woods, and are bending down
(or on a knee) digging a target you look like PREY to a cougar or
bear. Same goes for crooks who want to assault you or steal your
stuff.

ALWAYS pay attention to your surroundings while in the woods.
Watch for "ambush points" where you are blind to what's around
the corner, because the predators and crooks will use them to their
advantage (if you let them).

ALWAYS tell someone where you are going, and when you should be back.
Be sure to have contact with them when you leave the woods so they
don't think you became bear poop.

I have very limited hearing, and deaf on one side. My head is constantly
on a swivel anytime I'm away from home, 'cause if you can't hear them
coming you damn well better see them before they get to you.

Thanks for the tips Dizzy. used to prospect with another person who is no longer here.

I to am licensed to carry and depending on where I am do at times. The problem IMO is when you are bent over digging a find and looking for it. It presents a very good opportunity for someone to come up from behind and incapacitate you. Not only leaving you at their control but also providing them with a firearm. Too many times I have been digging to hear someone ask you finding anything? I have had kids come up without me knowing and tap me on the shoulder. This when every dig I try to turn myself to dig so as to face what I think to be the direction of most concern. I don't care who you are there are times you are at risk and can do nothing about it. As all have stated try to be aware of your surroundings and who or what is around you. If you feel threatened or uneasy, LEAVE!

Hey,

I've read some rather macho responses to this thread. I came up hard and I'm no poontang kinda dude, had my derriere kicked to the moon quite a few times - underestimating my intended "victim" I'd say.

Skills and abilities are ZERO if you're not even in the same world as your surroundings.

Both ear phone cups covered my ears and I had nothing around me but my chase into the dirt - totally and completely unaware of my surroundings. I was a puppy in the woods looking to get kicked.

Nothing matters except safety and an awareness of our surroundings. I'm pretty proud of myself in that I didn't Pee my pants while I was in La La land after the KO.

Sorry to read what happened to you guys. I'm seriously considering getting my permit.

You have to be aware of your surroundings... everywhere all the time. I never get too focused on digging that I'm not constantly looking around. Being armed 24/7 helps too. I carry my Smith and Wesson everywhere I go... even the mailbox.

Unrelated but related story. I bought a brand new camaro and needed gas. I pulled into a gas station that I never use which is next to some shady apartments.

As I pull in I see two thugs leave the gas station, cross the street, see me, then start walking back. They beeline right for me and one goes left the other right.

Now I'm an officer and was in uniform at the time. But I left my belt in the car. So I only had a knife on me. As they approach me I reach my hand back for the knife looking like I'm armed. Ala Paul Blart Mall Cop.

Anyway, they both stop dead in their tracks and look back and forth between each other. They look at me, at each other, and this goes on for about 10 seconds. One of them finally laughs nervously and says, "That looks expensive"... I say "yup" and they both high tail it out.

100% they were going to carjack me. But I gave the illusion of a hard target and a likely armed one too. This ruined their whole plan. But more importantly, I was aware of my surroundings. I didn't bury my face into the pumps like most people do.

Always be looking out. Bad guys want easy targets. Don't let yourself be the victim. The OP learned his lesson when he was kicked. He started looking around and caught them coming the second time. Might have saved his own life.

Also, get a phone. Haha. You never know when you'll need it. The cops probably could have caught the guy if you had been able to call them after the first incident. Since he obviously stuck around. What if something worse happens? You'll wish you had that phone. I never leave home without a phone.

We would hunt in Oak Cliff in Dallas! I did some dumb Sh*t back then! After all the difficulties with race relations I won't go back alone and worry for my friends that do. Is a silver coin worth getting rolled in the hood or worse shot dead? Glad you were fast on your feet John!
