Hello, I'm new to the group. I have an old metal detector I got in the 80s-- Compass Coin Hustler.
I had a great time though!
I found 3.78 pennies (it will make sense when you see the picture), 2 nickels, and a couple of charms (I think?).
I'm having a hard time seeing the dates on anything except for 1 of the nickels; it's 1970.

Is it normal to find coins in such condition?

Hello and welcome. You're gonna like it here.

As for the coins, yes it's normal. The zinc pennies decompose the longer theyre in the ground. The nickel looks like it was hit with a lower maybe. Usually clad coins other than zinc pennies will come out looking like what you've found, too. Just depends on soil conditions and time.

Welcome to treasure net. Not all of your finds will be that rough. But metal detecting is like Forrest Gumps box of chocolate. You never know what you'll get. Good luck!

Welcome! And yes, zinc Lincoln cents deteriorate quickly in the ground. In salt water they disappear in a matter of a few weeks or months.

Welcome from an old Tucson dweller-84' - 86'. Loved hiking the Catalinas, Mount Baldy, Tanque Verde Canyon, etc. To me all clad is "ugly", but can be cleaned up and recycled to spend. Hopefully you'll get some silver and gold and those items will shine for you. Do you know what the two items are with the loops on the rim? Looks like coins but, not US? Have fun!:hello:

Welcome from Illinois. Yes, your zinc pennies for the most part will be beat up. Most other clad is ok. They just come out of the ground with a darkened color.
