Everything is fine as is, just nothing coming to mind. Have to think oddball foreign, but may end up kicking myself if it's something I'm familiar with.

Where did you find it or did he buy it?
If purchased, what was he told?
Also, what is the 'coin' diameter in mm (or place a US one cent next to it for scale.)

I'm thinking possibly the Irish gun money used in the 1690s. If I remember correctly, the design on the back is pretty darn close.
