Agree, I instantly thought I'd seen a lock that looked something like that, but can't remember where or when. The spike is on a socket that looks like it was mounted on a stick, but why? Pretty light for heavy duty prying, maybe digging weeds in a garden, something like that?????

Having given it some thought, I am going to say the pointy thing with the socket on it is a hand-forged 19th century "barking spud" ..missing the spade on the tip.
Another great find!

Wow...thanks for the information everyone. I love the picture of the lock. That is exactly what it is. I've been hunting this old tree for a couple years on and off and every time I go back it turns up something new. I'm not sure what a Barking Spud is though. I'll have to research that one...

Thanks again for looking... :)

There are a lot of different styles of barking spuds, but this is the one I think yours is part of:

Are you in a tobacco producing state? Because the spike looks like a bent tobacco spear to me. My only problem is it looks A little small at the open end to fit on a stick. ??

I am in Virginia, but not much tobacco in the northern parts. The opening is big enough for my thumb to fit. I have sausage thumbs..LOL..

It's definitely not a tobacco spike. It reminds me of the end off an old oil can that you push the bottom of the can and the oil comes out the spout. But that's no explanation for having a ratchet end.

I'm pretty sure it isn't a part of an old oil can. It isn't hollow.

Ya know, the style of that spike makes me think it might be the tip of a lightening rod. We've had pieces that were similar in style here in What Is It? before...

That lock is cool. I think I dug one of those before years ago, and let it slowly rust away. :( Now I wish I had done something to save it, because I really want one in my collection.
