here's a rusty mystery....

found this old piece of something on the wagon trail. any ideas. it's 85 mm long 15 mm at it's thickest, and it has been broken off and comes to a point (almost)

Trader, I think considering where you found it, Oroblanco is probably real close. I think as likely though it may have broken off a logging hook, as these were flattened on their sides also to take the stress at the bend, and tapered to a point. Here's a poor example of a modern one. If Mojjax can drag his Eric Sloane book out again he'll probably find a more contemporary version a little more rounded (similar a bale hook). http://www.made-in-china.com/image/2f0j00HBFTJZcKlfrCM/Log-Hook.jpg

i'm going to try to clean it up a little more, so i can see if there are any hidden holes.

OK thanks. It looked like numbers in the pic. It looks like G-1 ? and a 9 or 6.
