Hey guys I went back to the 18th century house that I use to detect very often until I began to wear out my welcome. This is the place where I found lots of Spanish silver and my Louisiana Pelican button. So I haven?t been there in a while, but we had talked about when he knocks down the white extension they made in the late 1800s I could metal detect it. So it?s been a couple of months and I did a drive-by and I saw the white extension gone. So I began wishing him every holiday I would send him a text Happy Father?s Day, Happy Easter, Happy Fourth of July I guess I warm down and he said I can come today and just today I told him no problem and off I went. Well he said today I could come detect it today, but it?s a one day ordeal because he knew I would show up twice a week literally. Yeah so I have no shame in my game. This house has old New Orleans written all over it. When I got there I realize there was a lot of bricks laying all over from a chimney and square nails out the wazoo and boy was it humid today I was literally drenched in the first hour, but this is what I got.

I found a button which was in a clump of mud and I like to leave it that way so it keeps me in suspense of what it could be, so I got home jumped in the shower and took a hour nap and then I started cleaning it. I looked online and this is what it said,
?Rare button! Folger and Blake furnished clothing to the Soldiers in La. The company went out in business in 1862. Superior Quality backmark. Has a nice brown patina worn by La Confederate soldiers, one was found in Virginia but not many of these have been found!? image-2021-07-08-18:32:48-305.jpg
image-2021-07-08-18:32:58-932.jpg

With the 6? coil it hit this tiny charm i think it has1868 at the bottom if anybody knows what this please let me know image-2021-07-08-18:33:39-913.jpg
image-2021-07-08-18:34:33-547.jpg

Not sure what this says it?s a little small to be a shoe tap but then why do I know image-2021-07-08-18:35:23-400.jpg

And then I got these two lead pieces one is a small round ball and I don?t know what the other one is

And with that I?m gonna leave you with this beautiful property that I found so many wonderful things on. If anybody has any more knowledge on anything please let me know. Thank you for looking! Oh checkout the house

The glasses fill with the dripping sweat so they get tossed aside. Then the salty sweat stings the eyes. Staggering around blindly, only a matter of time before stepping on the glasses...

Oh I hear that Megalodon My eyes are terrible and I just bought a brand new pair of prescription glasses which were aggravating me when I was detecting and I lost them somewhere My Wife was pissed LOL

Wow Steve you just tripped me out the owner told me that?s where the slaves lived. This added a whole other level. Steve where did you find this info? I can?t believe that and that?s what he called the slave quarters. He said it was the last time I could metal detect because he built his father a house there and he didn?t like me there all the time but I had a good rapport with them yesterday so hopefully he?ll lighten up. Again thank you for showing me that I actually love it more now if it?s true that would be the closest to a slave tag you you can you get.
All I did was a Google search on Folger & Blake and it came up here. Unfortunately this link is not working.

Yes, the internet is full of interesting stuff. I saw the Times Picayune ad there also, did not copy it due to possible copyright problems as they are still in business.

Suggestion: "I feel bad about losing my new glasses. If I go back there with my detector, maybe I can find them". Optional: toss in a honey, sugar, sweetie or dear, in there...

The lead cylinder with the hole looks like a fish net weight. It would be strung on the bottom of the net to hold it down. However, it could also be for a fishing line because the net weights I have found have bigger holes than that one appears to be. Mine are from around 1800 but they have been used for a long time and still could be. The lead ball could be a buckshot or a muzzle loading rifle or pistol ball. The calibre (diameter in inches) would give a good clue as to which it is.

The button is a Folger and Blake advertising button. And up until now I owned the only one in existence. Congrats! Now there are two haha.

Your button is not confederate. It’s an advertising button or work uniform button from Folger & Blake of New Orleans (hence the “N.O.” on the button), and your button was made between 1849 and 1854, and was either attached to clothing sold by Folger or used as a livery button for company employees. Nathan Folger’s business is well known to token collectors due to the civil war era store tokens they produced c.1830s-50s.

Folger was one of the south’s largest clothiers, and his business was located at “17 and 19 Old Levee” in New Orleans.

Cool Button. This advertisement appeared in the Times Picayune on October 22, 1844. You may have a slave button! Not as good as a slave tag, but still interesting.

attachment.php

PS—other mid-1800s ads from Folger appear in the Times Picayune. For example, Folger sold uniforms to soldiers and clothing to civilians too.

On January 25, 1861: “offering 2,500 undress Louisiana uniforms for sale. Companies fitted at low prices.”

On 5/4/1861: “Notice to volunteers…two hundred blue satinet uniforms, red blue and grey flannel shirts… Volunteers going to the North should Clothe with warm clothing to preserve their health and strength TO MEET OUR ENEMIES.”

they gave notice in March 1862 that they were closing the business and selling all their stock.

So while the exact use of these buttons is not known at the time, these are not specifically slave buttons. It’s also highly unlikely that slaves wore these fancy clothing buttons. Nor are the buttons s specifically uniform buttons, as we know that no regiments were outfitted with them. Again, the most likely attribution is advertising or employee of Folger & Blake.

It does look good doesn?t it nicest one of our phone. True I was hoping it was military so I didn?t clean it up I left it just like I found it because I wanted to enjoy a high of what it could be. Well it wasn?t military but when I was brushing it and I saw How beautiful it was coming out I was pretty shocked. And I did find it where a slaves quarter was and when they knocked it down they told me I could Metal Detecting under it, But I could see your point with a slave wearing something with that button but I did find it under white slave cabin. I can't believe it. That is my favorite house in the whole world. I won't out the location on you, but it's right down the street from a restaurant in a historic building where I worked and metal detected.

The view from the house is stunning. I thought that house was from the early 1900's. No?

I used to go there all the time and peek in the windows, etc. It still had all kinds of cool stuff in there. I swung on the front porch swing. Someone called the police on me and they were very nice. They just laughed and escorted me out.

I always wanted to metal detect that place.

First saw the house and I was immediately in awe. The house was up for sale and I called Jennifer Rice the agent that was selling it And she said it actually sold to an uptown couple who were not going to knock it down and build up a new house and she was happy about that as well as I was. So one day I passed and luck would have it they were unpacking and I went and introduced myself and we got along pretty well. I also met another guy who knew the sellers and he hunted the property for 10 years all by himself. He had told me the only thing he never found were like small silver Spanish and American. So of course I have found plenty of half Reals and capped half dimes and a Pelican button. I totally fell in love with the house to myself and he gave me enough freedom to haunted as much as I could and then when his parents moved in from out of town his father would rather me not be there LOL but like I said I had one more chance to do it when they knocked down the white shotgun slave house and I found that button he told me it was a one shot deal. Well they still had bricks all over the place amongst a lot of debris. Now if you don?t ask you don?t get but I texted him and said if they move that dirt and the brakes and everything I?ll take it and if he could let me melt attacked it one more time when it?s clean. I got no response but that doesn?t stop me. I know about the restaurant you?re talking about that was a plantation I have emailed them with no response yet but I never give up. Here?s some of the things I found wait until you see this Ferdinand half Reals. Hey we should meet up some day[emoji491] IMG_2564.jpg
