Homemade Scoop? update

With the price of a big water scoop at over $150, I have entertained thoughts of making my own. I found this 3 quart stainless steel colander at WalMart. Im going to try and put a handle on it. Drill some bigger holes. What do yall think? Bad idea? lol

Very ingenious, though I couldn't bring myself to use it in public. You da man!

BCH- The only thing I can think of to make holes bigger is a punch press.
We had one in a shop I was in called a "Rotex" press.
Hand operated and a round selection of punches and dies.
My plastic ones am going to use end mill to make holes.
Drills want to screw into and pull thin material up.
They also shatter the plastic.

BCH- The only thing I can think of to make holes bigger is a punch press.

My plastic ones am going to use end mill to make holes.
Drills want to screw into and pull thin material up.
They also shatter the plastic.

Its a pain to drill the existing holes larger. The bit keeps jamming and leaves sharp metal. Maybe it would be easier to drill new holes in between the existing ones.

I went to Home Depot to buy this Unibit but they want over $40 for it! I cant believe that they want over 40 dollars for one drill bit!! I need to decide if this project is worth it. My 20 dollar scoop just tripled in price.

But then I think... ...who wouldnt want a combination stainless steel colapasta and fly catcher on a stick? 8) Could come in handy to have such an ingenius invention around the house. 8) wat u think Bob?

Yes, it might be worth the investment to build your prototype sand flea catcher/ pasta strainer on a stick.

Harbor Freight sells step bits that go 3/16" up to 1/2" for $10/set + shipping.
Ti-Ni coated. Still have that sharp edge tho - maybe also to be used as a cheese grater?

Another thought is using a chassis punch.
just a small hole and you tighten the punch with a screw thru the metal.
no spinning bit to catch and fling things around.

Re: The Return of the Colapasta!

I bought the Irwin Bit from Harbor Freight and it worked great enlarging the holes. The generic bit was under 10 bucks. I hope to try it out tommorrow in the surf. Here are the latest pics of the Irwin type bit and my "Colapasta on a stick" with the larger holes.

This cost me so far about $26 with the drill bit included.

I got the RTG 733 for $99.00 with about another $13.00 for shipping and that was with a 36" Lesche !! That's aluminum not stainless!!

Im just experimenting. But I am very surprised at how strong this scoop is but the problem was drainage. I enlarged the holes and hope to test tommorrow!

If anyone is making a homeade scoop or needs to enlarge the holes, the step drill bit kit is on sale at Harbor Freight with this coupon. They work excellent even in hard stainless. Push in to the next size will even ream off the sharp edges.

While my homeade scoop is extremely strong, it doesnt seem to get a big enough bite. I am using this in the surf with my DetectorPro Pulse and I have to scoop numerous times underwater to find the target. It seems to push the target instead of scooping and catching it.

I think Im going to have to buy the 8" Sunspot. I hear theyre the best. I prefer a wood handle. They seem to have added a splash guard/ocean cover which may help in the surf. http://www.gold-scoop.com/thescoop.html
