How many use headphones?

Bob,

I could not agree more. Those two things will help.

use headphones with volume control most of the time.
If My family is with Me ,hard to converse with them.
Only problem is with headphones, get so involved and
concentrating on MDing-- lose track of what is happening
around ME!!-- that could be a problem >:(

I slide one of the ear pieces off of an ear when people are around me and trying to talk to me. Has worked so far! :)

I have but my problm is the cord is too short and gets in the way when I find a target. I also do not like to block out all sounds because I like to hear around me and you cannot talk to others very well. So I do not use them anymore.

Frank, let me tell you what I have done here. I am 6 foot 5, so ALL cords are too short. I bought an extension cord for the head phones and put a clip ring, (like used in mountain climbing) on the second cord and hook it to my belt loop. Works great, and I have plenty of slack from both swinging and putting the machine down on ground while I dig and scan the plug under the coil!

I always use headphones, but sometimes me neck gets real tired from looking over my shoulder. Like when I'm in a park in the bad part of town. I think I am about to have the best of both worlds (or the worst depending on how you look at it). I just ordered mine the Rattler headphone by DetectorPro from "www.saveyourmoneystore.com". Not a bad deal for $75 and some change.

Hope it works like I expect it to.

How much do the Koss headphones run? Which model do you recommend? I saw earlier in the post that someone had bought a pair at Radio Shack. Does anyone have a link to a pair online somewhere? I had a pair of phones that bit the dust last season.

You can get KOSS headphones just about anywhere, including Wal-Mart and at www.walmart.com I am sure you can find a good pair on ebay or radioshack's website as well. I actually use a set of Radio Shack headphone, with stereo volume control, complete over the ear set that cost $19.99 in store or around $25 on line.

ALERT, THEY ARE ON SALE AT RADIO SHACK ON LINE FOR $10

My advice is get some quality phones. They won't quit on you when you need them. Go to the link I put in my last post. Look at the metal detector section then e-mail the guy and tell him you're a member of Treasure Net. He'll work you a good deal. And I think most Gray Ghost headphones are guaranteed for life.

You will never hear that soft whisper of a deep silver without a goodf pair of headphones. If you are going to cover the ground you might as well hear what is down there .02

-GC Coin try them you will get a lot more depth if nothing else Mike

I DON'T use them for a couple of reasons. First, and most importantly, I don't generally hunt "easy" areas. Because I hunt public, "hunted out" spots, I hit the difficult and inconvenient terrain... severe slopes, underbrush, overgrowth, etc. I would get the things ripped off my head all the time. I need to squeeze into tight areas and the cord is just too cumbersome. I do the "extreme" form of metal detecting... I've fallen and gotten hurt many times for the sake of the hard to reach coins, and headphones, I feel, would just add to the danger. Secondly, I don't feel comfortable hunting in a bubble... I want to have all of my senses available. In urban areas, I don't want people to be able to sneak up on me. Sure, it might ward off some annoying questions, but I don't trust people enough to walk around in a large, secluded city park with my ears covered. I can hear my machine (XLT) just fine, and I set the volume to the appropriate level when people are around.

I have always had Whites detectors. You will notice on the top of the detector box holes for the sound to come out. This way you can hear the detector without head phones. The problem is dirt and sand will get in these holes and eventualy screw up the detector. I put black elelictrical tape over the holes and use headphones. Whites knows this is true . They now sell [ $1.00] a decal to cover the holes with.

Got the Rattler headphone in yesterday. Took this afternoon off to try them. Fantastic! I actually got to hunt a park that is not in the best part of town. No problem with anyone walking up on me (the Rattler has only one ear piece). They outdid the Audio 200 from Kellyco by 100%. I actually had much clearer sound even with the traffic and nature sounds in the other ear.

I'm going to order a pair of Gray Ghost or Black Widow 'phones. This is the best thing since sliced bread.

I don't go out without them. Unless you have Superman ears you probably won't hear the real low, deep signals.
