How old is this detector?

A friend of mine has an old Garrett metal detector. I'm not sure how old but I'm thinking from the 1960s or early 1970s. As you can see from the photos it is still in excellent shape. Anybody else have one or know more about this detector? I could get more photos if needed.

I have the identical machine, used it for a long time. Wrote to Garrett with the serial number, and they said 1971

I use one identical...found my friends long lost silver bracelet about a .5 foot in the ground. Other detectors missed it....they do have a lot of trash in the yard....but you just gotta learn what to listen for.

Look at these three old machines. I’m going to place a bid on them at the estate auction. This auction has everything I love, so between this, guns, silver coins, and 1930’s-1950’s baseball cards I’m going to be having to choose a lot

Those old Garrett BFOs with the dual coils were the best darn pinpointing detectors I ever used!! Just toggle from large coil to small coil and you knew EXACTLY where the target lay. I can hardly believe nobody is using the dual coil technology today. I had no problem finding coins at 6-8" and I see that some new machines have problems finding gold chains whereas I found several with that old BFO. Wouldn't work well in highly mineralized soil though. Of course no discrim either but with use one could often tell what you were about to dig. We mostly just dug all signals and really cleaned places out of any metal in the ground. I have also returned to private properties I hunted with that BFO twenty years later with modern machines and not found one old item, that BFO had sniffed them all out.

Yup...I've got one that's older. the old Garrett Master Hunter BFO, with the dual coil setup, and I've got two sets of dual coils with mine. Still works fine.

Regarding the American TR S2 (controls on top, push button): I believe this model was released earlier than 1981. I have a physical copy of the Garrett 1980 Catalog, and this model is already listed there. Given that it appears in the 1980 catalog as a standard item, there is a strong possibility it was actually released even earlier, perhaps in 1979 or late 70s. You might want to update the table to reflect this." --- I have checked the Garrett catalogs for 1976, 1977, and 1978, and these models are not listed there. However, they appear in the 1980 catalog. This suggests they were introduced either in 1979 or early 1980. Listing them as 1981 is definitely too late.

Regarding the Coin Hunter BFO: It first appears in the 1973 catalog, but I don’t see it listed in the 1972 catalog. It seems like 1973 is the actual debut year for this model.
