I have a few fields in my area but all have not been cut and stay that way pretty much all winter. The one next to my house has grass that is about 3-4" tall, but is a large field and I know the owner would not mind me walking around in it, as it is used mostly for cutting down during the summers for grass bales. My question to the more experienced then I is, can you use a metal detector in a grassy area like this? Or does it have to be a well trimmed or cut area to be able to pick any signals up?

Just go as low and slow as possible. I have two sites I go to that are about 8 inches high right now. I seldom have problems locating deep relics if I stay low and slow. Occasionally I'll get lazy and try to find short patches of grass;)

Lol, there is nothing wrong with finding the short grass ;) . I tried the field today and it is just too thick, easy enough to walk through but I can't get a good tone due to the coil jumping off the ground too much. Not to mention the soil is thick mud when digging. I will have to find somewhere else to swing. I appreciate the insight!

Take a 4x4 foot piece of plexi-glass with you. Stand on the plexiglass to make the grass lie flat. TTC

If you're in the snow belt wait until after a good snow melts off. The grass should compact a good bit afterward. I have a similar field with the same problem and hoping the ground won't be to hard to dig.

Kentucky , if I read you right :3or4"inches"- have tried running in "AllMetal" mode right on top of the grass & see if you get any responce to(anything) out there? Worth a go me thinks!

Matt......if it is used for hay he may cut it again before hard winter. Unlike the others I believe that if it is too high it is just too high. I would put my efforts into finding another place to hunt until it is cut. I have started a few threads lately about a pasture field located by a spring. It has yielded about 30 flat buttons, 2 thimbles, Cloak fastener and so on. I got permission to hunt it but waited until it was cut. If you can't get the coil pretty close to the ground it really hurts your ability to retrieve things as we all know. Hay is a valuable commodity right now and it is unusual to see a field that is not cut just before the growth stops for winter. Good luck.:hello:

Great suggestions! I have tried in all metal, and although I do get some tones, but they are iffy from being so far from the ground. When I go to dig up that reading, and recheck to pinpoint the object it is gone. But I agree with you TNGUNS, it is possible they will cut it again, I will wait and see. They cut the field about 2 months or so ago, I know as soon as they do I will be in it swinging my detector around.
