I think its a yellow sapphire????

I think it's a yellow sapphire?

We found this in Helena National Forrest in Montana back in July. I fished it out of a creek while I was looking for gold nuggets.
Could it be a yellow sapphire?

Ok, the yellow Montana rough sapphires can look just like a chunk of quartz. Here is a very large yellow sapphire specimen found in Montana.

Sent a photo to Gem Mountain and they think it is Yellow topaz. I'd be happy with that....it's big enough for 2 nice rings for me and hubby. That's all I was really looking for in that creek anyway.

Being more of a geologist/gold prospector it was just a force of habit.

So am I, started gold prospecting some 12 years ago.
I just happen to like to work the rocks I find also.

What do you think about Gem Mountain's ID from the photo as Topaz?
I say it's a good guess due to the pale yellow color but would still want more evidence to make a positive ID.

I say it's a good guess due to the paleness of color but still tough from a photo.

Not sure, I'd begin looking at the most common minerals, for the probability is its one of them.

Most of the montana topaz I've seen has been brownish to colorless.. In fact got one here in faceting quality.
