I wasn't able to do any md'ing this past weekend because I had to replace my Dad's roof. All weekend all I can think about is an old farmhouse that I just got permission to detect at and it'll have to wait another week.. So last night once we were done Dad said for me to get my metal detector and find the nails we missed in the yard( and all I can think is how much I paid for this whites xlt so I don't find nails)....lol. So after about 50 nails last night I started digging some better signals and got a dime and quarter...After supper tonight I went back over and found some more nails in the back yard when I got a solid 87vdi reading at 4.5 inches...I thought this might be a silver quarter since he built his house in 1951 and I gotta dig it.. The next thing that happened was almost a blur...I pulled out a greenish large coppa disc and thought NO WAY. I immediately ran in the house and put it in olive oil..I was literally shaking.. After an hour or so soaking I gently brushed the coin and saw the cap behind the head and saw the date. I'm pretty sure it's 1794, but may be 95 either way it is my oldest American coin. I will say if it wasn't for Kirkpa I would not be as obsessed with this hobby as I am now.. I was actually too excited this time to do any fist pumps. I am still in disbelief. Oh and White's strikes again!!

I think I would look for nails more often. Way to go!

Great Find! It is definitely an addictive hobby!!!

Man, that is a fantastic coin, whether it gets any cleaner or not! You dang colonists, anyway..
Congratulations!!

I've heard that mentioned as a strategy--the more iron junk you take out of a site, the more clean signals you're going to get for those good targets.

that is awesome !!!! all the best on the return trip ,, old silver.... ;D

Buddy,

WOW, congratulations on the large coppa, bud. Those Liberty Caps are difficult to come by...that is a sweet find. KirkPA just did a fist pump for you!

I feel honored that I am the one to drive your enthusiam...ask any of my family members, they would tell you I have a passion like no other. I have always been this highly-energetic with any hobby I pursue...when I was 16, my bro, Zoy, and I used to go on 40 mile bike rides. Then, we pursued bodybuilding for a three years and did well there...I would also like to state that we worked really hard to obtain that physique...some dudes may think we were on roids, but let me tell them, it was 100% KirkPA genetics and determination. After the bodybuilding era, this hobby took over....once again, my PASSION is at its highest!

I wish you luck, buddy, on your future trips. Oh, check my top 25 this coming Sundee...there will be some changes. :)

Nice find Coinshooter, Liberty Cap Large Cents are always nice.

I do not think it is a 1794 Large Cent. It just is not right for it to be one, the placement of the letters in relation to the bust and on the reverse in relation to the leaves.

Is it thick with edge Lettering? If you can weigh it in grams that would help determine also.

If you posted a slightly better photographs not on the angle you have now with particular attention to the Reverse top half I can probably attribute the variety, yet alone the year.

Weight would say if it is 1794 or not, all of mine are around 12.50 grams, but all of my 1795's and 1796's are anywhere from 9.96 grams to 11.1 grams, none are in the 12 gram range.

Just for info: There are over 60+ varieties of the 1794, 10+ of the 1795 and 11 of the 1796 Liberty caps, each has slight or significant differences from each other.

This is quite spectacular!

I wonder what else came in with the fill dirt?

first one I ever found was with the XLT that I was using then. And I was using the 5.3 (six inch) coil. I thought it was a slug of some sort and fortunately didn't throw it away with the trash I dug. That's a neat find for certain!
