how about the Yorktown battlefields? Lived near them most of my life
and know the history, just not aloowed thanks to the theives mentioned above!
And also around the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Lots of tourists dropping clad,
one of the earliest settled areas for older coins, and then to mention all the lost
pirate treasures buried around there!

SORRY, I have to take Exception With Running down "Night Hawks, Even tho, I wouldn't Have Guts to do it..

If you think about it, a place you cannot hunt is perfect for a dream hunt. I like the thought of a free for all day for metal detecting, though it would never go. I have to stand behind my statement on Night Hawks they are bottom feeders. They ruin any possibilities for the average metal detector user and the motive is GREED. I would assume most of DC is Federal park lands and as we all no there is no ways to get on it, short of "Night Hawking", Putoowee!

Getting back to the Night Hawk thing, I wonder if we've ever thought this thing through all the way?

Some view the Civil War battlefields as sacred and anyone who would dig up anything from those locations is a low life.

But then I wonder, why is it okay for the government specialists to dig in these same areas?? Or, why are battlefields from one war singled out? What about all the battlefield areas of WWII?? Aren't they also sacred? What about the wars of Rome?

We all have points of view and reasons for our biases. Personally, I?d have no problem hunting any battlefield site if I had permission to do so. And I might also add, If I knew the area was free of landmines.?

I would have to agree that any battlefields would be held as sacred to us, the red blooded american. The problem lies with the horribly slanted view of the archies. Many times detectorist have offered to help without predjudice or motive only to be told that " WE DON'T WANT YOU PEOPLE TO TEAR UP OUR SITE!" Well, it looks to me like THEY do a pretty good job of tearing up a site as well. Take the Olympic park out in the mid west. The main part of the complex was to be built over an old fort. When detectorist asked permission they were told no and that they would be arrested if they tried. Archeologist had first dibs. Okay. When the archies were through, still no addmittance to detectorist. Some ingenuitive hunters decided to hunt the piles of dirt being hauled from the site and found bookoo's of goodies. Early shells, pins, coins and so on. If only the archies had let them hunt a bit. Well I have raved enough I suppose.

By the way my spot would be under the city of Philidephia. Imagine the artifacts from our earliest history as a nation! HH! Chris

I was in Austin, TX in the early to mid '80's when I read an article in the paper about an archaeologist surveying a building site for anything historical. It was on the edge of an ancient creekbed. He found a few Indian campsites from somewhere around 5000 years ago. One site in particular was a central site where the Indians would sit around the fire and make their arrowheads and spear points.

The decision was made that the builder could preserve it by PUTTING A PARKING LOT over it. Yeah. Right.

My bad, I guess. I went. I dug. I found several very nice chert arrowheads, one spear point and two knives. Not to mention a few burned buffalo teeth.

Now a parking lot is there. Was I wrong? If so, I'm sorry. Kind of equating it to the battlefield discussion.

Yes and no . A little cooperation and sensibility from the land owner would have solved everything. I have no ill feelings towards Archaeologist. Some are a little narrow minded. What is not realized is that detectorist would play a part in preservation if allowed. Just a fewpoints.

1. Most dectectorist hunt to collect not to sell.
2. They would gladly exchange the loan of finds for showing for the right to hunt.
3. Most would will or donate some or all of their finds if theydon't have an interested family member or friend to give them to.
4. Historical societies, federal gov., states are all overlooking a good resource for preservation by have an unfounded negative attitude toward detectorist.

usually the battlefields {protected part} only cover a very small amount of the actual property used in the battles, the rest usually is private property, and often accessable if people are approached right............already did okracoke...................i would have to say i would take colorado mike and kellys instrument and their knowledge using it, along with a trackhoe and a bulldozer, and dig up all of new mexico to a depth of 40 feet, possible deeper..........then i would be off to meet grizzly bare in georgia to hunt some nunnehi and make rocky face ridge a sandbox...................................gldhntr

Getting back to the Night Hawkers again, I guess I don't quite understand why they're so terrible.

Please don?t misunderstand me; I?m not trying to start something. Lots of people young and old read these posts so I think we should be clear.

I?m taking a natural stance and asking questions so that I can get this all straight in my own mind.

If Night Hawkers are terrible because they are trespassing, why do I read so many messages on here where people openly admit they found something while trespassing?

Example: Some person digs an awesome coin on his neighbor?s property (without permission) while his neighbor is gone, etc.

Example: Some person stops at an abandoned piece of property (without permission) and hunts.

Or, are Night Hawkers bad because they hunt battlefields? If so, shouldn't we be consistent and refrain from hunting on any battlefield areas (native American, WWII areas, WWI, etc., etc.), which would rule out almost the entire planet. Is a specific battlefield area more sacred because it has been designated as a "park??

I?m just curious. What specifically is it that makes a Night Hawker evil?
