I found this on one of the beaches here in Florida. I believe it is some sort of play coin or token of some sort. I understand that there are a lot of people on here that are good at identifying odd things. it is about the size of a quarter it is brass/copper in color. There is what seems to be writing and a date, but I don't believe it to be an actual date. I really believe this a play coin, perhaps from a game or something. I hope someone has seen one of these before. Thanks for any help.

Hi All

Thanks for all the energy trying to identify what this thing is. I followed one of the links and got on a path to this link, which narrowed it down to a coin from a Pirate Kit from Barnes and Noble. So it appears to be a "toy"

I found this book/kit by Valerie Garwood. Can't be certain because the picture isn't detailed enough, but it might be the "coin" in question.
I have also been searching pirate kits/games. The coin doesnt seem to match. There are even several Barnes and Noble pirate games with brass coins but I cant find a good pic. Which kit is it Sand Digger?

Isnt it an odd pirate with a crown and ruffled lace collar? :icon_scratch: "Be a Pirate...Become a King?'

Hi Guys, just wanted to say that my young 12 year old son recently found another of these coins. 3 ships masts on one side and a King on the other. This one was found here in Kells, Meath County, Ireland.

The mistery is finally solved. I have exactly the same coin, it came with the spanish version of the Barnes & Noble pirate set posted above that I bought for my son during a visit to Madrid in 2005 :)

Interesting News!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi folks,

I just wanted to throw a bit of something in here for those who are looking into this coin.
I found one of these coins a while back behind a rock wall that was knocked down in our basement. When I looked into it, I ended up on this site. I found it odd that a "toy coin" would some how end up behind wall in a hidden room in our basement. So I sought out a copy of this “Pirate” game to see if people are telling the truth, OR just trying to mislead collectors/detectors into selling a valuable coin for no money.
There is in fact a "Pirate" game that is using the design of this coin as a token in the game but here is the issue with that; got a hold of one of the games and found some interesting things out about the fakes within it.
The "GAME" coin is NOT made of bronze; it is made of aluminum/copper. The actual coin was in fact bronze and from what I was told, had the proper amount of ware on it for the time span.
After having both people I spoke to look over the coin and take pictures, two things seem apparent with their research. They seem to be consistently distributed all throughout North America. The first of the two men I spoke with thinks African Americans via the Underground Railroad may have carried them to their current locations. He came to this conclusion after speaking with two individuals that found them in hidden rooms that were once part of it and has suggested that I have the hidden room in my home looked into as that it may be of historical signifigance.
The second seems to agree with them being somehow associated with Mardi Gras as well as their distribution being somehow associated with the Underground Railroad as was suggested by the earlier gentleman.
Oddly enough the second offered me two hundred dollars for it directly after he tested the game token and the actual coin; being that I can’t find much more info on it then the people here I sold it to him; along with the game token to debunk any rumors of it being fake. It may end up being worth less or more but he as a collector was willing to take that chance.
What he did with it past that, I have no idea but I am now more interested in the fact that both this coin and the hidden room we found in our basement may have been somehow associated with the Underground Railroad.
Hope this assists.

the above post is as post that i found on this website 1741 Coin of unknown origin... - Page 4 - Friendly Metal Detecting Forums i found the exact same coin today mixed in with some of my stuff that i was going through after my husband and i just recentally moved in February. So i honestly don't know where it was originally found, but it is as this ladies post says much to heavy to be a fake. so if anyone finds some authentic information on these real coins it would be greatly appreciated.

Strange... this coin is. Hmm?

So about that coin, today(4/13/2012 -12:00PM) I decided to check my piggy bank to count my money since I havent checked for a couple of years.
I found four interesting coins two of which are the ones you have shown both mine have the date 1721 on them and a faint unreadable text next to what appears to be the image of some kind of king perhaps so I decided to search them up but found no information on them.
Next coin I have found is a small silver coin that is dated 1910 with front image being a queen and back side says UNITED STATES OF AMERICA as usual but in the center says V cents so I found that interesting.

...
And now I cant find the fourth but with these three coins you would have to wonder about the information from them.

as for the V cent coin more information I could metion is that on the back side around the V forms a wreath and on the front side shows no information but the date on the bottom and stars/asterisks forming a circle. But If the are more than just play tokens then being from almost 300 years from now they would have to be worth alot.:treasurechest:

I have 2 of these. I found them in a toy box that Ipurchased called "little box of pirate Treasures" from the company Barron's Barrons Educational Books. I was also searching to see what they were, but cannot imagine that they would be able to be purchased in a box of toys and be authentic..

Did you ever figure out what this coin is? I just found the same one (in Bellingham, WA). Is it a game piece or replica? It feels very heavy, so it seems a little more expensive than just a game piece. Mine is at least 40 years old, but I don't know if it actually from 1741. (I found it in the bottom of a giant coin jar in my parents closet that they started collecting when they were first married.)

It is a modern reproduction of a coin. From looking at all the photos of the different coins and all have the same exact wear markings and level of detail.

From what I've been able to find searching all over the internet and talking to a couple coin dealers, it is novelty coin from possibly the late 50's to early 60's. They have been found in almost all 50 states and in a few other countries. It is possible that it came from a game of some type.

Found Another!

My husband found this coin today while at work! He is a physical therapy tech in Las Vegas, NV! Who knows why it was in a physical therapy office here in the mid-west?? His boss is Persian but he said it wasn't his when my husband asked.

We were trying to find it's origin but like 72cheyenne said, nobody knows!

Hi,
I also have this coin. I can remember where it came from but I’ve kept because it looks like a real coin. Did you ever find out if this is a play coin/token? Thanks.
