Hi everybody...

found this today, I've also posted it in today's finds, it looks like Gold :icon_scratch: and has a stamp on the back which looks like a Lion and a R I suppose I could google it ::) but that would take that fun out of it :)

No worries , gnite , ill have a list of possible dates and when we can see the R clearly we can say exactly what period it came from , cheers

I would hazard a guess to say it came after 1890 as between 1784 and 1890 there would have been 3 hallmarks. The 3rd being payment of duty.

Whats interesting is there is no city hallmark , to me that rules out being older than 1784 , it will also give us a headache pinning it down as each city had thier own mint and cycles of letters.
Its English for sure, if it were Scottish the lion would be Rampant.

England has thrown up a great many old items , maybe it is older than 1794.
Hi....I took a close up of the R

gold plated (washed ) over sterling silver base -- nice find -- used to hold down the stink -- these were locket type devices --with a cloth inside -- perfume was dabbed onto the cloth to help cover offending "smells" -- a lady might have it "stashed" in her bust area -- remember there was no a / c in those days (sweat your buns off)-- and richer women lots of thick heavy clothes and daily bathing was not a common thing either . often once every week or so . :tard:.

I read that the native Florida Indians were appalled at the stench of Spanish explorers and their overall lack of cleanliness. Sorry to get off subject.

you really are not off base in my veiw -- big cy -- since in fact we are talking about what the item is and what it was used for *--to fully understand why the item was built like it was ( a silver item with gold (wash) plating to stand up to acidic sweat form a human body) and its use properly in the "context" of its time one must understand its use and why it was needed in the first place. -- folks from europe didn't bath too often back then.

No after dark ages...dark ages refers to early Anglo Saxon times 400AD-800AD :icon_study:

Unfortunately the R for 1812 and the R for 1892 are very similar. I would just favour the earlier date, because they were much looser on marking small items

I think you may have the wrong chart, notice the lions body how thick he is at the top of your chart...And how thin he is on the box lid, different lion ....

It's the same lion... they did'nt make a thick and thin lion - it's probebly lighting, dirt, and wear IMO.

Yea... even the date shapes are off on so many examples... I'm taking another look at everything.
