Hi guys, I'm not really a coin guy per se, but have a small collection and have been buying some silver lately. I recently bought this Morgan and several others from a pawn shop in WI (for about $25 each FWIW). Is the discoloration on it considered toning? Looks like the crescent shape is probably from sitting in the bag with another coin covering most of it, but there is definitely not any crazy rainbow colors that I see on toned examples on the web. Does this one have any more value than one without the discoloration? Anyway, more curious than anything. Thanks!

Super coin! Yes, that looks like a shadow of another coin on top of it, alright...!
Toned, it wouldn't meet the criteria, but is such a great shape, it certainly would go
for a lot of cash. Collectors sometimes like coins that have their little "history" written on them...!

It's toned, but not the good kind. No added value.

Toned, yes, but negative eye appeal can subtract up to a whole point from the "technical" grade and should always preclude a "liner" from getting the higher grade.

Interesting. Thanks for the info, guys. Much appreciated!

vadilos,
A belagted Welcome to treasurenet !!
If you find a toned coin that makes you say "WOW", it might look like this:

Coins like this can easily add a point to the technical grade simply because of its eye appeal.

they can also be faked

exposed vs not exposed silver to air "patina". toning is created during the planchet /raw stock production processes
