I found this jar of bits of metal amongst my grandfathers things. My first thought was copper, but it doesn't smell like copper and isn't oxidized at all. What do you all think? Could it be gold? What would be the easiest way to test it?

Thanks in advance!

Brass and copper weight about half as much as gold. Because they are all classified to about .125" I would tend to believe it is not gold. But this is my amateur opinion !

Either get a test kit or go to a jewelry store and have them check. It's possible what you have is sprue trimmings from gold casting? Let us know what you find out. HH

the edges look too straight & smooth for gold along with a too coppery tint. You could cut a piece to see the inside, good luck

Well since you're disillusioned, I've sent a PM with instructions of where to send to me...be sure and add insurance.

PS. Keep the bottle.

Its clipped copper wire pieces that are used in a tumbler to clean items. Many use this to tumble glass bottles. Take a look...

I would have thought you would know by the weight of the jar, when you picked up, if it was gold or not.:icon_scratch:
