I found this jar of bits of metal amongst my grandfathers things. My first thought was copper, but it doesn't smell like copper and isn't oxidized at all. What do you all think? Could it be gold? What would be the easiest way to test it?

Thanks in advance!

This gets me thinking..... how much more does an ounce of gold weigh, compared to an ounce of copper?

That's funny! Probably weighs as much as an ounce of feathers......

A good enough estimate of specific gravity could be made thusly: Weigh the jar as is. Mark a line above the material and fill with water to line. weigh again. Dump contents, weigh empty jar. Fill with just water, weigh again.

Does anybody really need more? Accuracy to just a gram would be plenty to distinguish gold from copper. Five minutes.

Having it all about the same size means absolutely nothing. Either does the color - gold can come in all sorts of shades, depending on purity and/or other minerals in it. Get a piece out and drop some vinegar on it, see what it does to the color. We always have a silver test kit and a gold test kit, and 4 or 5 streak plates.
You can figure it out in minutes.

PS: - I can smell copper ores.
