It's Old, And It's Gold. But What Is It?

I've been hitting a site that the targets are few and far between but when I get a signal, it's usually a good one. So far the coins have been a shield nickel, an 1803 Half Cent, a KGIII and many buttons.

Today I got a 12-4 reading on my CTX-3030 and dug this tiny gold at 6 inches. I thought it was a crushed children's ring at first until I was able to unflatten it a bit.

I have a feeling it's a gold band from an old quill pen or a fountain pen, but I'm hoping someone can give a positive ID on it. There are no markings on it, but it's definitely gold, and not a pencil eraser as someone else suggested!

HH
Neil

Awesome! Whats it weigh?

From a fancy pencil? lol Don't know...pretty cool.

Can't help on an ID, but at least it's gold! What are the measurements?

The folks at Avalon Jewelry and Pens are very knowledgeable about fountain pens. I have several pens I've purchased from them. Shot them an e-mail with some pics and measurements. If they can't help you, they might be able to point you to someone who can. Select A Collection | Avalon Jewelry & Pens

That's a very unique piece. Great find.

a part of a fancy pen makes sense. another thought that comes to mind is an ornament from a women's sash belt or the likes

I would think a piece off a fancy quill pen

Now that is really cool Neil. Please let us know when you can get a positive ID.

I have a carving set with similar silver adornments where the handles meet the hardware, OD of 13mm.
the diameter of yours looks more like pen size. Congrats on the unusual piece of AU

I had it tested, mainly because I wanted to confirm it wasn't modern...10,14,18K are commonly used today, but in the 19th century and earlier 15K or 16K was not unusual.

This one came in between 14 and 18K, "probably around 16K", which supports my guess that it's likely to be 19th century.

And BTW, Ben I found out they do exist!!

That was one of my original thoughts, but it is so small it would have to be at the very tip, so it wouldn't be practical.

Very Cool Find... Congrats

I have seen plenty of Silver versions of these on old pipe stems, not seen a Gold but could be worth looking into.
