I've got a key date! Thanks Relicdude07!!

I was browsing through Tnet and saw Relicdudes post on his keydate Vnickle.Big congrats by the way RelicDude. :) and I thought of the one and only V nickle that I have found .I says to myself ,Wasn't that an 1885. I took my worn coin bag out and looked at the V and yes it is!! 1885 in very poor shape. I had no idea it was a key date being that my coin book got lost in the move. The nickle is in no where as good of shape as RelicDudes and I am sure it is not worth much at all, but you just never know what you have found. Very cool. I did some civil war hunting about 15 years ago and I have dug hundreds of old coins but most were overseas so I kinda of feel like a newbe when it comes to US coinage. I am really happy and I just love this hobby. :) Now if I just could find a silver quarter and a pocket watch life would be good. :) Thanks to all and HH. ;)

Birdman,
I'm glad you still have your memory. ;) Congrats on your 1885!!!
Not sure what it's worth, but it has to be a real kick just knowing you found a key date coin like that.

I know you found that coin a while ago but I think it's cool that there were two of these posted in such a short amount of time. It lets you know that there are coins like this out there and if you get out enough, you might find one someday. Congratulations on your revelation of that being a key date. You must have been excited!

Hey Birdman

Good memory... they say it is the second thing to go.

I helped posture the minutemen in Minot, then went to Whiteman AFB, Missouri, and then on to Grand Forks.

While in Grand Forks they decided to explore the possibility of putting in ABM's (this in the 60's) and while digging to check for soil evaluation they hit a big gold reserve buried... naturally they tried to keep it under wraps however the word leaked out. While you are there maybe you can find the general location that it was in. I believe it was closer to the Canadian border.

Re: I've got a key date! Thanks Relicdude07!!

humm 1885 "V' nickle ---my 2005 redbook says $375 in G-4 shape --badly worn -- as a "dug coin" most dealers cut the value in half -- say $150 to $200--(most coin collectors are snobbish and only want the "best" grade for their collection ---so they don't want "dug coins" --but in this case you got them over a barrel because of its rarity --- and its a rare one indeed -- only 1,476,490 made 122 years ago about 10% oif the normal amount made in many years -- thus its badly need to fill "the" hole in any any "v" nickle collectors coin collection.

That's a nice find Burdie.

I also have a 1885. It has a full liberty. But I wouldn't take the chances and clean it. Not that I am not confident I could bring it back. I just decided to let it be. Sell it or market it as dug with potential if cleaned right. Still a great find man.

At least your silvers worth something Trent. Got an 1875 silver 20 Pfennig yesterday, and it´s worth a measly 16.00 Euro´s in top condition !!

Great memory you got there Birdman. It always pays to recheck your finds once in a while. I have a few dug V's but no 1885. Guess I'll just keep looking!

Thanks all for the nice comments. ;D The old church where I found it had been hunted in the past .It is about 110 years old and this and a 1964 nickle was all that I left with. Some one had to have been there cherry picking because I dug bunches of pull tabs and no penny's or dimes. I drove about 50 miles one way to hunt the spot and burned alot of gas in my jeep .I remember thinking wow that was an expensive nickle when I was driving home due the the gas I burned. It was and is a very nice surprise . :)
