Decided to hit a site I found about a year ago and beat up pretty good with my G2. Hoping the new T2 SE might find a few that I missed or items a little to deep for the G2. Some unusually deep stuff in this site. Got there and pretty grown up still. Instead of cutting it for hay again the land owner had put in some goats to clean around some rough areas. I had been checking it and was hoping they had grazed long enough to make it huntable. Hunted about an hour and got a flat button and a copper tag and the usual shotgun hull etc. Got home and noticed a little guilt showing on the button so heated some peroxide and threw them in and TADA. Guess who will be cleaning lots of flat buttons. Have dug dozens out of the site and will admit I stopped cleaning them all.

Hey Guns great finds, The post Don showed was a post I made last year. Anyways mine was a cuff size button what size is the one you found ? It also pays for everyone to check those backmarks to see if they say anything. CONGRATS :icon_thumleft:

Bubba,

Mine was just under 22mm. Standard coat. Got the second one this morn about 30 yards from the first. Posted a few ago in separate thread.

Vonclemen29,
Like I said above I have more of them to clean than I care to admit. Found so many in this site that I just quit. I have found some that said the same as yours as well as.... STRONG, TRIPPLE GILT, LONDON, COLOUR, etc.
Pics from the first few hours in the site. Found quiet a few buttons etc. since. Not a single coin yet.

You certainly have a 1700s site there, as the "mickey mouse" style locks in the lower right will attest Looks also like a portion of a cloak clasp bottom center with the brass chain links.

Ladies and Gentlemen, THIS is one of the many reasons to clean and ID EVERY find you dig. The list of items I might've thrown away if I didn't clean them is long.

BuckleBoy,

Ha, you are dead on with the cloak clasp ID etc. Lesson learned on the buttons. Could have easily missed the ID on some pretty good buttons. I bag everything per location, but would have been a bad deal had I not caught it. Will definitely make the effort to clean and ID everything now. :icon_thumleft:

Even crazier is this: finding one piece of an item might not appear to be something significant...but when other pieces of it from the same site come up, then it can be ID'ed as a good find. I dug pieces of an officer's CW spur from a site, and had no idea what they were, but once I realized they all went together I knew what I had dug. Always wise to at least keep in Ziploc baggies or small boxes labeled every whatzit from a field that might not be obvious trash...

Congrats,

Buck

Super find! I hope to find a flat button & get a surprise backmark like that! I found a piece identical to the tag, its some sort of saddle ornamentation, definitely colonial.

Just noticed a copper tag about the size of a playing card has something etched or stamped in it from the site, but it is faint. Noticed it when I was rechecking the buttons. Seems to be barely into the metal. Haven't taken the time to try cleaning it for an ID yet. I keep the best stuff individually wrapped and in a small bag and then keep that bag in the main bag with the rest of the stuff from the site. Location marked on each main bag. :icon_thumleft:

Great finds and a nice early site for Tennessee. Any time you walk into a field and find one flat button and it is one like that, well that is a good day! I have dug more than a dozen of the mickey mouse type locks and the faces to the locks, and as many of the oval saddle strap bracket escutcheons (or whatever you want to call them) and I have found them on a number of sites. Based on the sites I have found them on I would estimate they were popular from the 1780s to the 1820s, so they do not necessarily mean a 1700s site. Looking at the picture of your earlier finds, I'm not seeing the tombac buttons and shoe buckle frags I would expect to see on 1790s or earlier site. I would estimate that site dates from about 1810 to the 1840s. Definitely a period that gives up some really interesting coins and relics.

Steve in PA,

I can't buy a coin from the era ha ha. I have hit several virgin sites of the same approximate time period in the area. They must have all traded chickens because a period coin can't be found. By me anyway ha ha. Lots of CW relics in the same area as well. The sites with the CW relics are often as early as these but most were gone shortly after the CW. The little town was started officially in 1812 but gone by the 1870's, so you are correct about the dates. This site and one other in particular might be a little earlier as I have found some relics that seem to be a bit further back. There was a settlement there before the town. The site is very near the TN River. Sure would love to make it to New England some day. This area of TN had very few sites earlier than these, so you have us beat by better than a century.
