Mikhail Kalashnikov Dead: Inventor Of Famous Rifle Dies At 94

MOSCOW (AP) — Mikhail Kalashnikov, whose work as a weapons designer for the Soviet Union is immortalized in the name of the world's most popular firearm, died Monday at the age of 94.
Kalashnikov once aspired to design farm equipment. But even though his most famous invention — the AK-47 assault rifle — sowed havoc instead of crops, he often said he felt personally untroubled by his contribution to bloodshed.

"I sleep well. It's the politicians who are to blame for failing to come to an agreement and resorting to violence," he said in 2007.

Kalashnikov died in a hospital in Izhevsk, the capital of the Udmurtia republic where he lived, said Viktor Chulkov, a spokesman for the republic's president. He did not give a cause of death. Kalashnikov had been hospitalized for the past month with unspecified health problems.

The AK-47 — "Avtomat Kalashnikov" and the year it went into production — is the world's most popular firearm, favored by guerrillas, terrorists and the soldiers of many armies. An estimated 100 million guns are spread worldwide.

Though it isn't especially accurate, its ruggedness and simplicity are exemplary: it performs in sandy or wet conditions that jam more sophisticated weapons such as the U.S. M-16.

"During the Vietnam war, American soldiers would throw away their M-16s to grab AK-47s and bullets for it from dead Vietnamese soldiers," Kalashnikov said in July 2007 at a ceremony marking the rifle's 60th anniversary.

The weapon's suitability for jungle and desert fighting made it nearly ideal for the Third World insurgents backed by the Soviet Union, and Moscow not only distributed the AK-47 widely but also licensed its production in some 30 other countries.

The gun's status among revolutionaries and national-liberation struggles is enshrined on the flag of Mozambique.

Kalashnikov, born into a peasant family in Siberia, began his working life as a railroad clerk. After he joined the Red Army in 1938, he began to show mechanical flair by inventing several modifications for Soviet tanks.

The moment that firmly set his course was in the 1941 battle of Bryansk against Nazi forces, when a shell hit his tank. Recovering from wounds in the hospital, Kalashnikov brooded about the superior automatic rifles he'd seen the Nazis deploy; his rough ideas and revisions bore fruit five years later.

"Blame the Nazi Germans for making me become a gun designer," said Kalashnikov. "I always wanted to construct agricultural machinery."

In 2007, President Vladimir Putin praised him, saying "The Kalashnikov rifle is a symbol of the creative genius of our people."

Over his career, he was decorated with numerous honors, including the Hero of Socialist Labor and Order of Lenin and Stalin Prize. But because his invention was never patented, he didn't get rich off royalties.

"At that time in our country patenting inventions wasn't an issue. We worked for Socialist society, for the good of the people, which I never regret," he once said

He sure knew how to make a dependable weapon, that's for sure. Do you think Feinstein or Bloomberg will attend the services?? :)

it is notoriously dependable weapon, not much on accuracy ,regardless of your veiws on guns, his invention has been in every conflict since its creation, and will be for years to come, sorta like the british brown bess. but to look at it from a humaitarian stand piont its kinda sad that one of the most prolific inventions made by man, is also so deadly. go figure we cant just get along.if we did find a way to get along, just imagine where we would be!

I've built several from disassociated parts kits. Takes a little grinding and fitting to mate a bolt carrier from Pakistan with an Egyptian barrel block and head space it right...but they always end up being a reliably functional weapon and group well to 100 yards.
I love that gun.

Ahhh, the good old days before the ban on imported barrels.. When you could buy a parts kit and bend up a flat & build one in an afternoon. I have a friend in NH who is a federally licensed manufacturer who once took a home built AK and ran 500rds through it on FA as fast as he could swap mags, threw it into a stream to cool it off and then ran another 500 through it as part of a torture test.

ol' Kalashnikov said that he made the AK with tolerances for mud and sand. The M16 was made with precision which, in the long run, caused it to jam up when immersed in mud or muddy water and grit. The "slop" built into the AK made it more dependable in adverse conditions. Don't be fooled as to its accuracy, combat situations don't call for a bullseye in a 1-inch target at 200 yards to make a kill.

47 minutes til BATF finds you...then it is 10 years per weapon... magazines and ammo are additional points.
You must be 21 to purchase a machine gun in the US. The following states allow private ownership of machine guns if registered with ATF: AL, AK, AZ, AR, CO, CT, FL, GA, ID, IN, KY, LA, ME, MD, MA, MN, MS, MO, MT, NE, NV, NH, NJ, NM, NC, ND, OH, OK, OR, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VT, WV, WI, WY. Some states have their own registration requirements, but most just say you have to have it registered with ATF. Hope this helps. And FYI what BabyNeedsANewPairO'Shoes and I were talking about is building completely legal semi automatic rifles from cut up, chopped into pieces with a torch, "parts kits" that have been declared to be scrap metal by the government and perfectly legal to own. They are commonly used to build new rifles using legally registered semi auto only recievers. You fellas only "wish" it was illegal. Thanks for playing.

Perfectly legal to build and own any non-FA AK-47 in the U.S.
It takes 3 additional parts to make one FA and those parts are readily available online. But don't do it.
It's two damn expensive to shoot FA anyway.

pip in an honest effort to educate you on this subject THIS is what we're talking about. It is not illegal to own and you can not use it to shoot anyone. The government considers it to be scrap metal.
