Kevins own thread - a journal (but feel free to post random thoughts)

Time to show off a little...I went out to one of my secret spots after work and hit a sweet spot. Dug for a little over an hour and here's how I did:

Going out again tomorrow to help a disabled vet try his hand at dredging and Bazooka sluicing :)

Very good color in that pan Kevin. Always like to see what's in your pans. :)

Thanks for sharing

Just wow. That must be a special spot!

Good Lookin! Nothing like a little shoveling between work and dinner.

Thanks all! Today went well. The vet, poor guy has a lot of trouble with one knee due to a really bad parachute landing I think...and that limited his River time somewhat. I think he liked the 2" dredge because he could sit in the water and soak his knee! We also tried out the Bazookas, Prospector and Sniper. I think he liked the whole thing a lot after running an A52 on his own the prior day. The Sniper with its lightweight portability was definitely preferred :) Here's the gold from the bazooka demos. The gold in that spot is really tiny! image-1533943029.jpg

Got out again yesterday (12th) with ChrisInCO and a couple other guys at Big Bend on the South Platte. Got some good digging in, then got chased out by wind/rain.
The gold:

And my sluice set up using a bucket of water to hold the sluice down in the current :)

thats amazing for an hours work! Good job

Thanks!

Meanwhile, I got out again today. Dug in a new spot on a gold bearing waterway. Here's my gold in rows by size: +30, 30-50, 50-100, -100. It only added up to 0.03g but I guess that's ok for an hour in a new hole...you could say I learned where not to dig but I did like seeing those +30 flakes!

Wow! Nice gold! And for less than 2 hours in Colorado--that is fantastic. And helping a disabled vet, too. Way to go, Kevin; I love it when good people are doing nice things for others. Two thumbs up.

Chunky stuff Kevin...find that source! I'd work all day for that kind of gold per hour!:love7:
indeed! In this case I know exactly where it's coming from...a thin layer of ancient riverbed material that runs in a layer under the entire southern part of metro Denver, so I just need to dig up this end of town to get all the gold!

Instead it's a matter of finding spots where local waterways cut through that layer. By hitting spots where well rounded river rocks show up in the creek bed, you can easily find areas where that old riverbed layer has been re exposed and re concentrated.

I especially like this^^^^

I was wondering if you all made it there, sorry I missed it! I think I used parts from your v dam on Monday though..lol!

That's cool Goldhock, you probably did! I've often thought about how many times those big rocks have been moved, adjusted and used by one prospector after another!

So, do you think this is where the gold in Cherry Creek, Franktown, Elizabeth, Gold Run Creek, etc., came from? Ben Parker and others never did figure that out.

YES, exactly. Ben Parker never did any real research on this back in 1960...we've learned a lot since then! I've read a bunch and sampled that layer in exposed hillsides and confirmed the gold is there!

Got out for the afternoon today with GoldPannerDave at Big Bend. Dug right upstream of our sluices and did pretty well from what I saw in test pans of cons.

You Both sure do look Great! Congrats

Thanks. The river where we were was only inches deep (you can see the rocks in the foreground). Kevin's standing in a hole up to his inseam by the time we left; mine was not quite as deep. However, we are both wet up to our shoulders from the shoveling out of the holes.

Based on Kevin's preliminary panning, I cannot wait to get the cons worked out.
