Hi all,
For a longer post along with my other finds for the day, visit my post in the Illinois forum http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,422146.0.html. I pulled a key date merc today -1921. Unfortunately there is damage on the obverse (Not me wiping) it came out of the ground that way. I tried my spray bottle to clean in the woods, but could not see the date. It wasn't till I got home that the sonicator revealed 1921.

1921 O.webp1921 R.webp

HH,
-Jon

NICE COIN! I love finding old silver!

Nice find, to bad about the obverse, still a great coin! HH

3rd lowest mintage in the series. Great find.

that is a sweet one to find! congrats!

wow fantastic find! looks like it may have some low grade heat damage like maybe a trash fire, or possible fertilizer damage, but it still looks sweet to me. congrats! :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

I think it may be from sulfur in the ground. Several of my silver have come up darkened like that. Once I found one darkened like this in a patch of wild onions. This one came from a mucky flood plane, and though sulfur may not directly be present, stuff like methane maybe. I don't know if Methane reacts with silver.

Too bad - the reverse of that dime indicates it would have been one of the nicer ones.
