Landowner Receptivity???

Greetings. In your experience, how open are landowners to metal detecting for Civil War relics (assuming the detectorist follows protocols, etc.)? Thank you.

I have a church that had cavalry presence. The church is closed down it's very old. The person that oversees the preservation is an old woman. She said yes it was fine to do it just send me some pictures of what you find. I've been going for years now . I can tell you it's been hit before and while I've been going. No clue if they had permission or not. As far as current homes with battle or camp activity I'm sure those people have been approached a lot over the years. But sometimes you do your research and find a place that that the owner might not know it had activity and or not ever been detected. Those places are out there .

Thanks. It has been decades since I've actually approached landowners for permission to search. Back in the day, I never encountered a problem - or rejection. But, things have changed so much since the 70's/80's ... different mindset out there.

Oh yeah for sure, I usually get mine through people I know or work, it's hard for me to approach a stranger or door knock

I seem to have a pretty decent record for gaining permissions. I don't ever hunt around the owners home. Fields and bush.
Probably 25,000+ acres of free roaming land I can play on.
Most landowners really don't mind having some half baked old dude cleaning up sharp metal debris out of the fields for free.🤣

I’m lucky. I live in a rural area that was dotted with small farms in the late 1800s. The farms are huge now and one permission will get me access to several abandoned farms. I’ve lived here 33 yrs and know about everyone. Only two farmers have denied me permission. One is a grouch and the other one’s sons hunt it. One thing that always worked when door knocking was to take my pretty wife along with me.😀

With so much crime going around near me ,most people are weary of theft / animals being shot and people coming in (treasspassing) and leaveing trash and damaging fences and leaveing gates open when they are closed! Thats way we have problems gaining access ! Do your self a favore and get to know a person good and then ask him to bring you around to introduce you to them and see what that gets you next time ! I'm a FIRM BELEIVER IN THIS APPROACH ! Plus when yo get in ,pick up any / all trash you see and make sur the property owner sees what you did and give them first pick of anything you find ! Youll be suprised at what will follow ! another thing , don't go therlooking like a bum like I do sometimes.
