Lincoln Cents: Keep the 1982's, or throw them back?

I've gotten addicted to CHR with halves, dimes and quarters. I've been picking up a few rolls of pennies this past week.

Do I keep the 1982 pennies for their copper content, or throw them back?

I know the 1981's and before are good to keep, but I am a little confused on when the change to Zincolns happened.

It happened during 1982. Some '82 are zinc, some are copper. Personally, I just throw all '82s back, just to be safe. When the day comes that I sell my copper cents, I don't want any zincolns mixed in there.

Some non-Ryedale owners use a scale or even a metal detector to tell the difference. I just don't search enough cents to go through the additional hassle.

I separate them out into an 82 bag. Eventually I will be able to sort them by machine, weight or other method.

I'm still working on identifiying if I have any thing numismatic in the 95, and 98-00 I've been setting aside.

The zincs weigh around 2.6 grams, coppers 3.1-3.2

If you are looking for silver, quarters are the worst. But if you are a cherrypicker, there are a lot of interesting die varieties/errors when compared to halves and dimes.

A friend of mine recently started CRHing dimes. He told me he averages one for each $150 searched. Not good odds.

haha..I used to think that too..but lately all I get are dimes, and I pull a silver about every 150-200 dollars, and I get them from different banks..

But Quarters!?!..I dont think I would ever try them

The way the halfs has been lately I am glad to get 1 silver dime per box. I would really be happy to get 1 silver dime for every $150 searched. That would mean I could get 3 silver dimes out of every 2 boxes......Matt

If you want to sort the copper 1982 pennies from the zincolns, ring the coin. Coppers will produce a faint tone when flicked, but zincolns produce no tone at all.

I made a little scale out of a popsicle stick and glued a nail in the middle. Put a known penny on one side and it is very easy to see if the '82 is a copper or zincoln. The coppers are heavier.

I bought a cheep harbor freight scale which can measure grams, oz, dwt and oz troy. Took my 82s to the scale and switched units to ozt copper is .10 and zinc .08
Aprroximatly 80% were copper, definatly worth keeping

My Ryedale Ace does the work. I just pile them up and feed them in. About 70-80% of the 82's are CU.
