I dug this piece yesterday in a yard in duluth, MN near downtown.I'm curious what this is. Its really thin and is double sided.

Anybodys info would be much appreciated. Have no clue what it could be. To me, it looks like a ship with sails.it also has some dots and some interesting characters around the edges. Thank you very much

If anything is better than finding Viking coinage, its finding Viking coinage and someone to translate it!

Congratulations.

Its tough, given that the inscriptions are hard to read due to the photo and the condition of the coin. I guess my masters degree in History (with a focus on the rise/fall of the roman empire up to the dark ages and Charlamagne) for once is actually put to good use..lol

Assuming this is authentic, and I understand that that is probably all you can do at this point, I would like to cast a banner vote.
Finding a Viking coin deep within the USA is pretty amazing.

Either it's a modern fake, or I'm going to learn something today... and of course I hope for the lesson.

From such an early period, and made of silver, I think it's fair to assume it would be a hammered coin... but the extra metal only makes sense to me if it was from being cast. I can not see how that is possible on a hammered coin.

it kills me to rain on this parade....and of course I could be wrong....but this coin just isnt adding up.Someone please show me an authenticated example in any condition. We are here to find the truth and I am rooting for a banner find....but so far....not

Sure would be awsome if it was authentic.I need to gather more info on it and bring it somewhere . I Found it downtown duluth in the oldest neighborhood here. I Hope its a genuine piece! Makes sense how there could be viking era coinage laying around this city

the problem I see thus far(and I spent hours)is that this coin configuration does not exist in any data base I can locate.Does not mean that my efforts are difinative....it simply calls for an example.coins are and have been catalouged for a very long time.
As far as hammered....there are problems there as well.I have seen and researched many from differant time eras. This is not even close to any and to me does not make sense.Unless a 5 year old was placed in charge. We are still unsure of its metallic origin...that alone may end this or continue it....but talk of a banner find is to say the least....premature.

still rooting for ya tho !!!!

cheers

the sasquatch has a point there...hammered coins can be a bit off center but most of the time there was a bit more care taken. Or is it not off center and that asymmetrical look is what it was meant to have...which also would be unusual.

....uh....the oldest neighborhood in Duluth still isn't old enough for Vikings to have settled there....

Would love to see it taken to a reputable professional and either verified or cried over lol!!

Could be from a collector who had an accidental spill..after all isn't there a big Scandinavian presence in Minnesota?
Also, I wouldn't be quick to dismiss it either, a lot of the metal the northmen used was from plunder, so a lot of the coinage was made on the fly to buy sympathy or pay homage.

Well to the north of you, the largest Icelandic festival has been held for the last 125 years......

Icelandic Festival of Manitoba

I've attended for many years and have seen numerous Viking reinactors, several gift shops and crafters selling Viking rune jewelry and coins, and loads of visitors from Iceland.

Any big Swedish, Norwegian, or Danish festivals in Minnesota? Gift stores selling "Viking" stuff over the years?

Obviously the big question....is this coin a fantasy piece or the real deal.

Either way it's a great find!

Cheers,
Dave.

Thank you all for your research on this item I'm now heading back home to minneapolis. I'm going to take it to check its silver content and any other information I can gather about its possible authenticity. So yes, I will definately keep you all posted as soon as I find anything out!

We have Scandinavian celebrations out here in Oregon, and all that kind of repo stuff is sold also, but I want the coin to be real, so I go along with Muddyhandz and Muckybottles, shucks my family settled in Minnesota from Norway a long time ago, lets hope one of the many immigrants lost a coin they brought with them. My best wishes that your coin turns out real.
