Anybodys info would be much appreciated. Have no clue what it could be. To me, it looks like a ship with sails.it also has some dots and some interesting characters around the edges. Thank you very much

a silver splash type coin "hammered" to mark it -- about the time that the Viking were about --they know hat Vikings were living the east coast of Canada * they were by nature explorers -- to the them great lakes would be like inland seas to be explored

I'm waiting on a couple emails from 2 different sources. One from the british museum in europe and one from the university of MN. I've been so busy with work lately that I havnt been able to bring it anywhere mainly because I do not know where I should bring it to. I will definately let everyone on this thread know the information I come up with! Thanks all -Josh

Interesting post. No clue here, but would love to find out what this item truly is.

....uh....the oldest neighborhood in Duluth still isn't old enough for Vikings to have settled there....

Well, they may have been there before there was a neighborhood! This could very well be real, but if the earlier interpretation was correct (it referenced "Skraelings") then it may have been made for use by Vikings in North America. I don't see that as probable, but as possible, and would help explain the failure to find it in the catalogs. Just can't understand why there would be any real need for local mintage when the population numbers were probably minimal, and I would think that barter was probably a more reasonable means of exchange. On the other hand, I wouldn't be surprised if it was determined to be a modern fantasy piece. Personally, I wouldn't take any one experts opinion on it, unless the opinion is backed up in some way.

This is totally out of my area, but I'm interested in finding out if it is the real deal or not. Does it appear to be naturally worn?

Below is a close up of the coin if that helps anyone.

Here's a site showing a recreation of a Viking coin being made:

Either it's a modern fake, or I'm going to learn something today... and of course I hope for the lesson.

From such an early period, and made of silver, I think it's fair to assume it would be a hammered coin... but the extra metal only makes sense to me if it was from being cast. I can not see how that is possible on a hammered coin.

Agreed, its not hammered & a modern copy.

I don't know, it looks pretty weathered and old. It was found in an urban neighborhood? With plenty of houses around? More investigation of the immediate area would turn up more clues if authentic maybe...

It's pretty obvious what the answer is because no one would wait months to update if it was real. (They'd be posting within days, maybe hours)
