Hello everyone

For the past few weeks, me and my physics class have been making metal detectors. We started by printing the circuit board design on the copper side of a circuit board. Then, we dipped them in acid to eat at the copper that was exposed. After drilling holes into it, we put various transistors, semiconductors, and other sciencey stuff. Afterwards, We built the coils by making three wooden circles, one smaller then the other two, then wrapping copper wire around the small one and gluing it all together. Additionally, we glued copper on it so it would not false when we moved it up an down. Then, we made a tuning device, a volume control, and a switch. Lastly, we held it all together with hot glue and tape. Nine people participated, one didn't bother to finish it, some didn't show up for the hunt, others fell apart or shorted out. Basically, mine and one other person's worked well enough for the hunt. My teacher buried around a hundred in dollar coins and quarters, plus some foreign coins. I found $37 in dollar coins, $19 in quarters (one dollar roll and the quarters were taped together), and a chocolate coin. Then I cleaned up with my DFX and was surprised to have only found nine remaining dollar coins and 4 foreign coins. Additionally, my sister showed up and used my detector to find three dollar coins.

This belongs on the BANNER!!! I wish I had a teacher like this in High School.

This is one of the coolest posts I have ever read on here.

Awesome project you all did, heck please pm me the instructions for I would like to make on too.

I'd even let my hot rod project sit for a bit to do this kinda thing.

Your teacher tossed 100 bucks in coins for you all to find too. I salute him for that amazing gift he gave, that is a lot of money for a teacher. Thanks for sharing this wonderful event with us here.

ok when do your detectors go into production??? ;D from the pics you all had a blast. You said they only read to about 4 inches well now its time for another class to get them to go deeper. I admire your teacher, good to see something new come out of classes other then the old basic junk no one even wanted to keep after they made them. Will trade you nine ash treys and a bird house that would terrify a woodpecker for what you made. lol

Fantastic, you, your fellow classmates and your teacher. What a great project. Does your teacher have a detector?

I bet all the major detector companies will be knocking down your door to get you to join there company's.

It is very complicated, i know everything about it except the inner workings. Several of my classmates' detectors fell apart at the hunt. I'm sure google has some info more detailed then what I can give you

Thanks everyone!

I love it ,like my older brother said, why buy it when you can make it. yes it should be on the banner

Who says you have to be a rocket scientist?

What a class project! Your teacher must have a detector of his own. Nice of him to try and get some more people interested in a great hobby.

You did good my man. WTG

can you say genius ??? man, that is amazing ! i wouldn't even know where to begin to make my own detector. that is awesome !!!

GC,

you guys rock, and your science teacher, well he rocks a lot. You should give him a plaque and a great big hurray for putting the class on this project. Plus he went out of pocket to fund the hunt. HE IS THE MAN, give him a pat on the back.

My feelings exactly!!

Too Cool! Thanks for sharing this story!
