Let me tell you all about my buddy, Bootstrap Vinn.
You all know him as the wild man from Maine who found (among many other great finds) a rare type California gold coin and a Flying Eagle Cent this season. The gold coin made the banner.
What you may not know is that he's a truly wonderful, generous and helpful person who I am lucky enough to call my friend. From sharing hunting stories to helping me keep my focus and perspective during the early days of my MD career, to taking the time to help me with my research, he's always there for a friend.
I guess that I whined a bit too loudly about the rather disappointing (silver=zero) season I had this year, because these beauties showed up in my mailbox today. An 1896 Large Cent and an 1853 3-Cent piece!! These two coins now have the honor of being the two favorite coins in my collection and I wouldn't sell them for anything. They mean more to me than if I'd found them myself. They'll be handed down to my kids someday (who hopefully won't sell em either!) The 3-Cent piece is now the oldest coin in my collection, not the mention, the smallest. Man, these things are really little....I can see how they'd be easy to lose and hard as heck to find. The Large Cent came from the same fairground site that produced the California gold coin. Its pretty cool to own a coin from a location I read (and drooled) about on this very forum.
Bootstrap, I thank you with all of my heart. You are a true friend and a generous, giving soul. The world needs a lot more like you, buddy.
Your friend,
MP
