I just got these in the mail on Saturday and man are they nice. Some excellent examples of South American Beads from the Lake Valencia area in Venezuela. I was told these are from the Arawak culture, which is the South American Indians Colombus encountered in 1492. There are 50 Beads in all and 41 are made from Shell, 2 are Pottery, 5 are Stone, and 2 are Bone. There are 6 Effigy Beads and 1 of those I'm pretty sure represents a Jaguar and 2 are more than likely Bird Heads. The other Effigies I'm not sure of. There are Shell Discs, Shell Tubes, Sea Shells, some made from what is referred to as Greenstone, and a couple of Bird Bone ones too. 4 of the Shell Beads look to be made from the center of either a Conch or Whelk Shell and are really cool. There is even one Shell one that has 2 holes drilled in at angles on one side that meet to make 1 hole on the other side and another one that is drilled similar to what our Birdstones are and have holes from both ends that meet holes on the bottom. There is also 2 Shell Discs fused together, so if you only count 49 in the tray I counted it as 2 Beads.

Very nice addition man. There's a good variety of bead types in the group. It's cool to see they were stringing up similar types as we find up here. The greenstone piece is really nice. Thanks for the look.

Thanks Ryan. I really like the greenstone one as well. It is drilled from both ends and the hole in the middle is really small and it is polished smooth as glass. The 2 Bird Heads in the bottom right corner and the little Effigies are my favorites though. They are just way to cool. Of course I love Beads so they really got me going when I opened the package. My wife was making fun of me because I kept pulling one out and going, "Wow, that is so cool". lol
