In one of my old Fisher Gold Bug books, this is before Gold Bug-2. I can remember reading that if you walk over a large clean vein of quartz, you will get a positive response. Positive on a gold detector is the opposite polarity of iron minerals. The coil goes past a hot rock, sounds off leaving the rock. Positive objects give a response when moved toward the coil.
