Detector(s) used
Whites Prism III
Hi all,

(sorry if this post shows up twice - my first attempt had pictures that were too big)

I had the best day detecting ever! I went out for a little detecting this afternoon to a little park near my house where I had found three indian head pennies. One of them was an 1864, so I knew the place had potential for more old ones). I passed over my usual spots and went to an area I had not been in a while (back when I was still learning my machine). After about 20 minutes (a Jefferson nickel and two memorials) I got a signal on my prism III that seemed like it might be an IH (or a regular dime or a pull tab or a bottle cap :-) ) I popped up the plug and from the bottom fell a clump of dirt back in the hole with a little silver in it. It was really tiny - too small to be a dime and I immediately though halfdime, based on the discussions I have read here. All I could see was the word DIME on the back and Miss Liberty seated on the front through the dirt. I resisted the urge to wipe it (another tip I picked up on this forum) and placed it in my pocket for later. A few minutes later, I was working the area and within about 5 feet i get another IH :-) signal. I dig this one up and sure enough I can see it is a greenish IH, but again I can';t read the date and I figured i would reveal them both at the same time. I plop it in another pocket(so they don't rub together) and kept on detecting. After a little while the bugs were getting bad (and the suspense was killing me), so I went back home.

I was most excited about the half dime, so I rinsed it first with water and it turned out to be an 1837 - wow the first year they were struck! The reverse is a bit worn but it is my first - so I will keep it :-)

I then rinsed the indian head, just to see what I had (I already knew, based on the thickness, that is was not older than my 1864 - see even more knowledge from this forum!)

Anyway - I could not believe it when i saw the date 1877 !!! I had just read the recent banner post on this coin!

Mine does not have the same level of detail as NJ Marty's, but it beats the heck out of a lot of the IH pennies I have found previously from that area (maybe the ground knew it was special :-) )

Here is a picture of them both together to show how small that half dime is (cute, huh?)

Anyway - I guess I will have to consider getting this coin professionally cleaned and slabbed (as mentioned in many of NJ Marty's discussion points)

Thanks for looking!

Wow!! :o :o If you're going to find two coins it may as well be those two. That 1837 half dime looks so bare. What a great first year coin to find. I cant remember seeing too many of those posted on the forum. (only 2 that I can remember..yours included) And that 1877 IH speaks for itself. Definitely a banner post! Congratulations. :headbang: :hello2: :smileinbox: :sunny:

Yes indeed-- BANNER!!! And congrats!!!

I hit 2 half dimes last year... 1843 and a no date..... they are so small.... you cant appreciate how small from the scans...... both of mine came up as a penny on my trusty xlt..... and were much more shallow than it led me to believe... I almost dug em both....... but thankfully just missed em both with my trowel...... as for the IH..... man I think most of us want to hit the 1877.... I hit an 1864 this yr......... no date Flying Eagle..... but hey I would trade em both for your 1877... heck ill toss in my 1876 seated dime....... ... congrats man...... grwat digs,,, go back and dig every "iffy" siganl...... go slow... over and over the same areas from different angles etc.... dig all the trash.. then go back over it... I hit a nice 1911d Barber dime in the same hole as 3 nails this yr..... so just keep digging.......
