I found this nugget(?) in a rock pool last summer. It could possibly be brass but has shiny gold coloured flecks, green tarnish and pink. At the time I thought the gold flecks were scratches through the tarnish but 7 months later the flecks remain and haven’t tarnished. These photos were taken at the time. The last was after cleaning with vinegar I think. Later today I will add photos of current state and under a microscope. Any help gratefully received just curious . I wondered if it was brass from smelting or from a ship wreck? 70072BBD-133B-4661-A3AF-192260F0EBF9.png 1261C562-359F-452C-8991-7CAAB0AF8C41.png 7A58AA65-DD04-44B2-9790-0E2584A6B5CB.png 3D2151CC-4A84-4054-A1AF-FAE50D9BE055.png

Odds are it's bronze or brass ??, but that patina that it had before you removed it leads me to believe it's very old. May have been an item of bronze that was subject to a fire at one time so very long ago.

Thanks for the reply. Any idea why the bright gold flecks?

I'm not seeing what your describing as gold flecks in the pictures, but that doesn't mean you don't see them. Maybe some well focused close up photos will help in seeing what your talking about?

That is a real curiosity! Gold color gets everyone's attention. Good luck with it!

Ha - yeah, was pretty excited when I found it but concluded it was brass. My daughter has been playing with it for a few months. Now I’m curious that it still has the shiny spots after this time.

Is there anywhere I can take it to get it checked?

Looks like a highly polished nugget of iron sulfide(FeS2) also known as pyrite. Looking inside the nugget you can see unpolished pyrite. There have been fake bronze sculptures that had pyrite inside as a filler. If you hit the nugget with a wooden dowel and hear a thud you can count it out as gold. Or even run a magnet over it. Also you can do an rub/acid test.

Hi thanks for your reply. It’s not magnetic- does that rule out pyrite?

I took it to a Jewellers today. He gave me a bit of hope as he said it was the right colour after filing however it frothed green on the acid test.

Still don’t know what it is but it’s not gold!
