military dog tags

im new to this site and i am trying to find info on tracking the owner of a set of military dog tags that were in a box i purchased at a flee market... the soldiers name is THOMAS G. ALLEN JR. SS# AF B NEG NONE.............i am really just interested to find out if theres a story, if they were lost, i know that soldiers prize these items and i would like to offer them back to this man or his family. any help would be appreciated! oh yeah, and this site and forum is really cool. im purchasing my 1st detector soon "garrett ace 250" and am looking forward to sharing my finds with everyone.. thanks

thanks for the welcome! the tags im unsure of the age on, they dont look to be real old, but again im unsure.... they were in the bottom of a box of misc. stuff i purchased here at a local swap meet/flee market in panama city... & montanajim i will pm you that ss number as soon as i can. thanks again

check with the american legion or VFW post they can access military records and get you started in the right direction.

No promises... I found a guy who meets the name requirements but have not made contact yet... no reply at his phone.

Maybe we'll get lucky, I'll try again tomorrow.

I'm reluctant to run the SSAN because of Privacy Issues, but when I speak with this fella, I'll check it out.

I assume you made the purchase in Florida?

Okay...

I spoke with THOMAS G. ALLEN JR.... and found out he was stationed in Florida at one time, and did loose his dog tags - but the SSAN did'nt match up.

So - sorry! I had a friendly chat with the guy but he's not the one.

If it has a SS no. it is from around 1970 or so or later; somewhere around that timeframe. Before that we had service numbers and didn't use the SS for i.d.
