:icon_scratch: What? 65-70 halves are 40% Silver, hope you haven't been throwing those back, or hope you have I guess. Maverick.

Some of the 40%'s will show some clad, I have some like that too, it isn't uncommon to see the clad in a 40% coin. HH, Maverick.

I'm not sure if the Mortamus response is serious. But to address the original poster, you do realize that from '65 to '70 that the Kennedy halves are silver clad?

Maybe that's what we meant by 40%'ers being "dirty". We crh'ers used to throw 'em back.

yes, I have been CRH for a decade.... but have you ever seen one that looks like your 71-present rim?

Most of the times the 40% halves stand out, but I am sure I would have missed some if I only edge-checked rolls. I always check the dates.

I edge check and have seen 40%ers that look dark like dirty copper clad (71-present) edges, but definitely never one that looked like bright clean copper clad edges. The 90%ers definitely stand out, but there have been some 40%ers that I would've missed if I didn't double-check the date.

I had a run of 10 boxes last month from one bank pickup with over 300 keepers, and most were 40%ers. I have definitely seen enough lately to know what you are talking about. Now, if you say that it is a bright copper edge then you have a $1,000,000 coin.

Can't wait to see the pic. HH

If its a 67, it has to be 40% silver...

Do a sound check and/or magnet check. you will have your answer :)

I have found some with pink/clad edges... pretty tricky sometimes... sound check will define the answer for you though

40% halves are 80% silver in the outer layer and 20% silver in the inner core... you can see this if you ever get one with a hole drilled in it.

Its definite silver, did both checks yesterday... sounds and looks great on the face, I wonder if its a chemical that changed it??

Nope that's just what they look like new, my best condition 40%ers have nice pink copper that looks exactly like clad. The silver reflects different though than nickel, so after your eye is trained you never miss 'em

Turn it around, you are holding it upside down. It is a 1976 clad half dollar....:laughing7:

Seriously, I have some that have the copper looking ring around them also but they sound just like silver, just 40% instead of 90%.
