Good Afternoon
I have been a fan of this site for about a year now. After 28 years in the military I bought a house, settled down in Alabama and decided to get back into metal detecting. I bought a Fisher F75 special edition and haven't looked back. I live on a golf course so on days it's closed I hunt the cart paths, natural areas and around the lakes. Well today it's closed and I decided to go for a little hunt, I usually find lots of quarters, dimes and penny's but never anything old. I started hunting around this old pine tree right outside my back gate and with in a few minutes I got a 100% dime hit about 10 inches down. Dug it up and out popped this beauty, man my fire is lit after 6 months of finding lots of modern coins. It looks like it was dropped right after it was minted. I am addicted for life NOW! 155 years old-man that's cool.

A beautiful almost mint 1859 Liberty Seated Dime.

I have been fortunate to have experienced a similar situation so I appreciate your euphoria. I was detecting around an old country community ballpark and had been digging mid forties and fifties coins. Decided to move into the dirt parking lot and got a nice soft signal. Figured it was another mercury dime. Popped up this small slightly beat up silver disc. Gently cleaned away the dirt and bam, 1836 half dime. No clue how an 1836 half dime ended up there, but you just never know.

Congratulations on that gorgeous seated dime!

WOW, have yet to find one.

Awesome seated, welcome to the addiction!

http://cointrackers.com/coins/13928/1859-liberty-seated-dime/ Type: Liberty Seated Dime
Year: 1859
Mint Mark: No mint mark
Face Value: 0.10 USD
Total Produced: 429,000 [?]
Silver Content: 90%
Silver Weight: 0.0723 oz.
Silver Melt: $1.47
Value: As a rough estimate of this coins value you can assume this coin in poor condition will be valued at somewhere around $18, while one in "perfect" condition can bring $658. This price does not reference any standard coin grading scale. So when we say poor, we mean worn more than would be expected from a coin in this age, and perfect meaning it looks "perfect" without flaw and possibly even certified. [?].
Additional Info: Just 800 Liberty Seated dime proofs were issued. Proofs sell for between $400 and $1400 depending upon condition.

That's a beauty ! And right outside your gate.

If it hadn't been 10" down, I would have thought it was someone's ball-marker that had been lost recently, considering the condition of that coin. In any case, great find! :icon_thumright:

Old Aviator, a warm welcome to the "blue pages" and thanks for sharing your find. She's a beauty and there's no better feeling than when those old coins come out of the ground and show themselves after being hidden for many, many years. Thanks for sharing your coin with us and I hope there are many more like this one in your future.

I agree.
But it was under a very large pine tree next to a very large root easily 8-10 inches down.
I have found at least 30 dimes/quarters/penny's all modern and used for ball markers, but this coin was to deep and their were no finger wear/rub marks or any indication of contact with other coins.
I have searched this area at least 3 times and like I said before the ground is like cement but with tons of rain lately I think it loosened up the soil enough for the mighty fisher-haha-to go deep. My signal was very strong 84 with 100% confidence in dime.
Thoug it was another Roosevelt when I turned over the dirt, then I picked it up and first thought it was Canadian because it said one dime, then I turned it over and realized what I had. Funny how the brain works when it sees something that makes no since.
Cleaned with warm water and a soft Q tip that's it. The photos don't do it justice it's almost perfect.
It was raining today and I still went out, I am officially hooked.
I can't even imagine finding a gold coin.....someday maybe.
