My First Three Ring Bullet

Spent Sunday getting the boat ready to take out on a local lake. So after replacing the power steering pump, prop, and skeg repair, I finally got it started up. Hooked it up to the truck and got the wife and son to tag along. Threw the AT Pro in along with the water scoop in too. We didn't get onto the water until after 6 but we still had a few hours of daylight left. After a couple laps around the lake I anchored in and area many boaters hang out to swim and play. I was able to do some detecting in the shallow water for about an hour before the wife and son were getting bored. Surprisingly, I wasn't finding much but was able to dig a three ring lead bullet. A first for me. It measures .45 x 1.09 inches and weighs about 26 grams. I'm assuming a long ago hunter missed his target, maybe?

It's a modern black powder bullet and was not fired. So a hunter dropped it.

Hmm, it was found in an area that probably hasn't allowed hunting since the mid 1950's or earlier. The city where the lake is located started as a village founded in 1928. What attributes make it a modern bullet?

Here is a pile of them I dug on an old firing range. Some of them are almost matches for CW era three ringers, they even are developing a nice white patina, but they are all 20th century.

Being in Michigan, I would not expect it to be CW era, but more likely late 19th or early 20th century. I base this on the later mid 20th century development of the suburban Detroit area which pushed hunting areas north and west. I was thinking the indented surface on the bottom might be a clue to age. Either way, it's not something found very often around here so it's cool.

Looks like a 45-70 Springfield round, probably for a military surplus hunting rifle, nice hunk-o-lead

I agree, it looks like a 45-70 round used for hunting rather than military. Here are a couple period 45-70 rounds I dug at Fort Hays in Montana. They measure 0.458 x 1.3 inches
