Well this find was inspired by Piggman.

I don't hunt that often since I really like finding older stuff and the older sites I have permission to hunt are not that close to home...I'm working on fixing that by locating and getting permission on some local older homes.

The clad really does nothing for me (sorry Gregg). But after reading all the posts that Piggman has put up about methodically searching his soccer fields I decide to try one out. There is one right around the corner from my home and I had a little time on the morning of July 4th so I headed out with the DFX.

The ground was pretty hard so digging was not fun but in addition to the clad (not sure how much - went right into my clad coffee can) I found a soccer coin about the size of a half dollar and this coin pictured below which was one of the last targets I dug and yes I think I scratched the front.

I showed my wife and told her what I thought it was and she said I was crazy since there is hardly any detail but after I showed her a picture of the coin I thought it was she saw it too. I don't want to taint your guesses so tell me what you think it is then I will post what I think it is tomorrow...Thanks for the help.

** Okay I could not wait until tomorrow - I think it maybe a Draped Bust Large Cent. My wife thinks she sees a 9 where the date is which would make it 1796-1799. This would be my first 1700s coin. Is this wishful thinking or do you see it too - The scratch would be around the center of the word LIBERTY and the dark part to the left is the hair tied up.

Re: My oldest coin - maybe??

My guess is it is a large cent but could be a number of old copper coins that size.
There have been more then usual popping up on treasurenet lately, I hope the
pattern continues. HH,
Donny

OK I took a good long look at the obverse picture and now I am saying Draped Bust Large Cent(1796-1807)
and I think a light oil soak might even get a date to come out. Good luck

Re: My oldest coin - maybe??

I hope it turns out Great!!!

Keep diggin'...

Re: My oldest coin - maybe??

I'd be anxious to know what it is too! :o Did you put it up on the 'what's it' forum? Might want to take some pics of the coin outside in natural light...might help? As with Donny, when I first saw it I thought large cent...but...I've never found one. :D

Re: My oldest coin - maybe??

I think Definitly an old coppa, I have about a hundred and most look like that.Probably late1700s

Re: My oldest coin - maybe??

Large Cent, but I can't tell which type.

You can see an "ON" in the second picture. Great find!!!

Re: My oldest coin - maybe??

:o :o :o :o great coin there..... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
that'll make your week !! :)

Re: My oldest coin - maybe??

Too big for a Large cent, but some kind of foreign copper!!

Okay, I think it is a 1790s Draped Bust Large Cent. I'm not sure but that is what I'm going with. I never even expected a large cent from the soccer field and to find one I think is from the 1700s is just a complete thrill.

You never know when you will find a keeper from an unexpected location.

I think I can see the "TY" in LIBERTY on your coin.

Be careful about cleaning it!!! I hope it's a Draped Bust coin!

Good going!

Glad to give you a new place to hunt. You never know what you will find in those. I prefer older places also, but civilization has destroyed this area I'm in, so now I hunt the newer places that are close to home. All of us Cedar Choppers have either had to move off or die. Some just adjust, but it aint easy. KILLER FINDS!! Glad to have given you the idea.
