Congrats! I found an 1866 recently in much worse shape and it cleaned up really nice. This is a great find. Beautiful!

Awesome 2 center, I've found an 1865 last year, one of my favorite old coins, congrats!!!!

thanks granthansen, im trying to figure out if its ok to soak in vegetable oil being as i dont have olive oil, dont want to take away from the patina. read the cleaning forum and saw the guy that cleaned the heck out of his 2 cent with lemon juice and baking soda and then rubbed his secret blend into it to darken. his warning scared me off from his technique. i dont have alota of old coins and dont want to risk this one.

Be careful with lemon juice. I've had bad experience with it. If you search my posts you'll see my cleaning of it. Olive oil is good but I don't think it'll take all the dirt off. You can soak over night and then clean with a tooth pick.

Great piece of History.....The 1864 2-cent is the 1st year issue of that series......and the 1864 is the very FIRST coin that the U.S. used the "IN GOD WE TRUST" motto.

Awesome find!

It looks awesome just like that. I would'nt touch it. Nice find.

You have a nice green coin with no dirt on it that you can read the date and details clearly. Now, why on early would you want to clean it further and risk it all? Nice find for sure! Don't risk it by putting oil on it, or using a toothbrush, or anything! Use the coins where there isn't much to lose to experiment with cleaning methods. Gosh.

Best Wishes

BEAUTIFUL COIN! I love the green patina as is! Since I spent 40 years of my rather long life living in Virginia, maybe I walked right over that coin & didn't know it, lol. Have only been detecting 2 years, all here in CA where we now live. Whether you do more cleaning or not, you've found a winner! HH Andi

i clean mine with winegar and toothpaste :) it works :)
